The Missing XBox Controller

A Gaming Story by Annie Kopec

“Honey, I told you. No XBox until you’re finished eating,” a mother said as she put out steamed carrots onto the smooth, wooden, rectangular table.

“But I AM done,” whined twelve-year-old Jake Connors in a mouthful of steak. He(according to his friends) was the best gamer of all the world. Jake could beat anyone in a 1v1 on Minecraft, including the creator of Minecraft(he did, and he beat him with an enchanted stick and no armor).

“Just at least finish your salad,” Jake’s mom ordered.

“Mom, I told you, I’m full,” he reminded her. He put his plate towards his 6 year old brother, Nicholas. “Eat up, youngling.”

“YAY!” Nick cheered, and shoved the steak pieces in his mouth. His mom came to attempt to stop Nicholas from eating Jake’s dinner and not his(which, apparently, was peas and rice, which Jake’s mom sad was “proper food for a 6 year old”). Jake quietly snuck upstairs, went into his messy, dark blue painted room, and went to retrieve his controller from under his bed so he could play Skyrim, but it was, oddly enough, not there. Maybe I accidentally put it in the game cabinet, he thought. Jake checked in the smooth, white cabinet, but the controller wasn’t there either. He started to get frantic and checked everywhere: his dresser, his black desk(studded with Skylanders), his closet, even the big, Minecraft chest he kept in his room(he won it in a raffle). He found nothing.

“Mom, did you hide my controller?” he yelled from his room.

“Nope, I didn’t,” she shouted back. Dang, Jake thought. He quickly ran downstairs as soon as his 16 year old sister, Amanda, came in.

“Hi there, dork,” she said, and ruffled his hair not in a mannerly way.

“Leave me alone,” Jake replied, pushing her away. “I’m looking for my controller. Did you hide it?”

“Why would I do that?” she sneered. Guess it’s not her either, he thought. Which leaves me one more suspect.

“Nick,” Jake announced. Nicholas stared at him in fright, apple juice dripping down his chin. “I would like to talk to you privately.” He walked over to his younger brother, picked him up off his chair, put Nick down, and led him upstairs to his room.

“Alright, Nick, tell me truth,” Jake said. “Did you steal my controller?”

Nick’s eyes went wide. “No I didn’t!” he protested.

“Then let me check your room,” Jake said. He saw Nicholas fidgeting with fear of being caught. Jake went to his little brother’s room, and quickly spotted an unusual pile of stuffed animals near his brother’s dresser. He smiled. Exactly what he needed. Jake strolled over to the stuffed animal pile, and rummaged his hand in the pile until he felt something oddly smooth. He quickly picked it up. It was his missing controller! Nicholas did hide it! Jake quickly ran towards his room, where his little brother was reading the book that his favorite youtuber DanTDM wrote(Jake got to meet him in person).

“Nick,” he said. He dangled the black controller from his hand. “Does this look recognizable to you?”

Nicholas let out a tiny sigh. He put down Jake’s book, and sat at the foot of his bed. “I wanted you to spend more time with me,” Nicholas confessed. “It feels like you and that, thing, are a couple.”

“If you would have asked me, then I would play with you,” Jake said. He sat down near his brother, and ruffle his hair. “Maybe on your birthday I could give you your own XBox controller so we could play together.”

“YAY!” cheered Nick.

“But first,” said Jake. “Let me teach you how to play my games.”
