Education is a home-school partnership, and the lines of communication must always remain open. You can email me whenever you have questions. Some days are very busy, so please know that you have not fallen off my radar if I do not get back to you immediately. I will do my best to reply to any emails by the next school day at the latest.
Email: jennifer.evernden@ocdsb.ca
Phone Number: (613) 828-4736
Please note: During the school day, I will be busy working with the students. Please call or send an email to the office with any urgent messages.
It is also a good idea to email the office when you will be picking up your learner during the day. You can email them at: shingwakonsps@ocdsb.ca
Please fill in these forms as soon as possible. All of these forms make it possible to help keep students safe and supported in our class this year.
Getting to Know Your Student. This will help us get to know your child a little better and how we can best support their learning.
Using Technology for Learning. This form includes websites we would like to use in the class this year that are not part of the OCDSB form.
*These forms must be completed only once for each student. Before students will be able to access technology at school, the acceptable use of technology form must be completed.
Our School uses the SafeArrival system for you to report student absences. You can find information about how to use this system by visiting this website.
You can also send me an email to let us know if your student will be away from school for an appointment or for an extended absence.
We love to celebrate birthdays! However, we cannot have food treats at school due to allergies and dietary restrictions.
If you would like to send in a non-food treat (e.g. pencils, small toys, etc.), please check with me for our class size, as it can change.
Also, please only send party invitations to be distributed at school if you are inviting our whole class.
There is a limited amount of space in our classrooms to store materials and students will be moving between classrooms during the day. We are asking that any personal school supplies that have been purchased remain at home until we need them at school.
Your learner may choose to keep a small pencil case in their backpack of the special pencils, markers, or other things they have purchased. This will give them access to these supplies when appropriate.
Many children have active lives outside of the classroom, and we aim to respect their time (and yours) by minimizing the amount of work being done at home.
With that in mind, there will not be homework assigned by me. On the Our Learning page, I will share ideas for activities you can do with your learner each month to support what we are doing in class.
Resources will be shared on the Google Classroom throughout the year for your child to use as needed.
Instead of homework from me, your child is encouraged to:
read every day for at least 15 minutes;
have an age-appropriate conversation with a caregiver for 10 minutes a day;
reduce screen time;
play games;
participate in unstructured play
Students will participate in two outdoor recesses every day and will, sometimes, have Physical Education outside.
We will also be taking advantage of the local community and the park near the school.
Students are strongly encouraged to dress for the weather. There will be times when inclement weather means our recesses are indoors, but getting fresh air is the goal, so they will go outside as much as possible.
Physical Education classes are an important part of your student's school day. Shingwàkons students will have some form of physical activity daily.
It is recommended that your student have a pair of well-fitting running shoes, which have non-marking soles and are suitable for running, jumping and playing indoor games. These should be at school for the days when their class has Physical Education.
Schools will be a mask-friendly environment where students and staff who choose to wear a mask will be able to do so free of any harassment.
Please remember that if your child has been sick, they must have been fever-free and vomit-free for at least 24 hours before returning to school.
We will continue to promote proper hand and respiratory hygiene.
