"Film Studies" style?
Just a test exercise to get the kids to shoot upload and submit a video greeting to the Google Classroom.
Initially - just go through the process of shooting, uploading and submitting a cellphone video
Create a 1-2 minute video to teach your target audience a tip that they can use at home during the Quarantine
This exemplar was made specifically for my students to get them started. It (intentionally) used NON ADOBE resources, and DIY solutions like the cellphone stand itself as a proof of concept. THe thumbnail was made using Photopea.com
Set up a home studio with decent Background, Lighting, Tripod (stability) and Framing. How are you solving those issues at home?
Try to install Adobe Rush on your cellphone, and complete editing there. Students should try adding a title, scenes, credits/date and background music.
What is your daily routine - how do you connect with friends and family? What are the toughest parts, and what are the unexpected bright moments?
Demonstrate the rules of good composition and then demonstrate what happens when you BREAK that rule. Here's a brilliant but Inappropriate Exemplar
Week 1
Task: To ensure that students can shoot, import and edit then export video. The camera work should apply the composition concepts learned in photography. The pacing should be fairly quick with an average shot length of 3 seconds. Take a simple task of going to get a glass of water from the sink and break that action up into a number of shots then edit them together. Shoot a 10 to 15 second video with a minimum of 5 different shot changes. Keep it simple, this is your practice video, it can be of a person answering the door, getting a snack from the fridge....
Here is a video I use with the grade 11's that will give you an idea of how to take your idea and break it into multiple shots. You can watch the entire video but just the first 6:30 will be enough to get the idea. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhXMpBk3GDA
Hints:
record an extra two seconds before and after the action you are recording. In editing this will allow for a smooth transition between clips.
record each camera shot 3 different ways (ie if the person is grabbing a cup shot it with a CU of the persons hand grabbing the cup, then shoot a medium shot of the same action, then try a POV shot of that action
Since many of you will not have a tripod for you device, try to find another solution to keep your camera steady (Jimmy Kimmel is using duct tape on his iPad) here's a video if your looking for suggestions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4Mf9vWvugE
Some of you will not have anyone to shoot in your video - you may try to set up your camera and be the talent, you can used toys as your talent and add a voice over after, I've had a student putt a golf ball into a cup, be creative but please do not stress out about it - let me know how its going.

Week 2 (+1hr of week 3)
This week you are to film and edit a 30 second sequence that contains an edited special effect. In the intro video for premiere it showed a simple effect of Derek jumping through the door of a car. (Here's a single shot of folding laundry - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0K4RgkDOHs or a multi shot on zoom gone wrong - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v69I5MNrCyE (note a blue towel was used to make selecting the dog easier)
For you video be creative and have some fun. Include at least one effect (this could be a well placed cut between two clips) with a some clips leading into the effect and after the effect. Be sure to frame your clips well and keep the shot pace moving. Your goal is to make it appear like it was shot with multiple camera (try not to have any shots that last more 5 seconds). If you can add a royalty free background audio that would be great. (look under the resource tab for link in google classroom)
To get you started, here are some tutorials on how to create some initial special effects. Please note, that most of them can be done with only straight edits.

(note you do not need aftereffects, I'll post how to do the blur using photoshop or photopea)

Human Cloning - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcAjX2YzAVQ (don't go crazy with the number of clones, and it best that if clones do not overlap each other in the frame)
check out https://www.youtube.com/user/ZachKingVine/videos for some inspiration, there are also a number of videos that hack how he's done the effects.
If you find cool ways to secure your camera steady, please add a comment to help your peers. If you have no one to shoot, please post solutions that you have come up with.
