You can start collecting volunteer hours the summer after graduating grade 8. We encourage students to try and complete 10 hours a year.

Summer school is available for any student who has finished their grade 8 year. Students who are interested in this option typically take Grade 9 Geography which is available in French, and English. Each summer the courses offered change, so it will be important to take a look to see what is being offered this summer. The courses offered usually are shared with schools by the end of April.
When does it start & finish?
Summer school courses typically take 4 weeks to complete. The student works on the one course all day from 9:00am - 3:30pm. The OCDSB offers summer school during the month of July.
What is the advantage?
Taking a summer school course enables students to take another elective in their grade 9 year. This means they can explore more of the courses that Brookfield has to offer.
Is there a disadvantage?
A loss of down time for students over the summer may be something to consider. The course is all day long, and compact. It can feel quite taxing for some students.
If I take a summer school course, does that mean I can have a spare during the school year?
Students can not have a spare in grades 9-11.
Will it be Online/Virtual?
We have not heard as of yet how it will be delivered. Last summer most courses were virtual. There were some that were offered in person. If an online course is requested, students are expected to be online working for a minimum of 6 hours a day.
Who will enroll the student?
The student's grade 8 school will enroll the student.
Yes, students are able to leave school property, however must make it back in time for class to start at 12:25.
