The Oberlin High School Concert Band is the premiere, comprehensive ensemble for students studying a wind or percussion instrument at Oberlin High School. Students will study repertoire in various styles by a diverse collection of composers. Repertoire selection is in effort to advance students towards mastery of technical facility, and develop aesthetic response. The Concert Band studies and performs repertoire in OMEA Class C+B (Grades 3-4.5). Students enrolled in this ensemble meet for the entire school year, present at least three concerts a year, perform at the annual Memorial Day service in Wright Memorial Park, and participate in OMEA Large Group Adjudicated event. This is a curricular ensemble which offers one (1) credit in the Fine & Performing Arts category.
The "Pride of Oberlin", the Oberlin High School Phoenix Marching Band, is the most visible and recognized ensemble at Oberlin High School. The marching band is a non-competitive show-style band which performs at all scheduled football games and at selected performances. The ensemble’s rehearsal schedule begins in late July or early August and continues through October/November. While the ensemble is comprised of primarily band students, we allow orchestra and choir students to participate as well. We also accommodate students with fall sports conflicts so that they can also participate in marching band. Most students will say that participating in the Oberlin Phoenix Marching Band is their favorite part of being in band. This is a co-curricular ensemble which offers a half (1/2) credit in the Fine & Performing Arts category, and exempts students from their Physical Education requirements.
Rehearsal Schedule: MT 3:30pm-4:00pm, R 6:00pm-9:00pm
Shades of Blue, Oberlin High School's jazz ensemble, is a newer offering for students to study different music outside of the normal concert band repertoire. The instrumentation is geared towards a traditional big band (saxes, trumpets, trombones, and rhythm section), and studies music in styles like jazz, rock, blues, and funk. This is an extracurricular ensemble and does not offer any credit.
