All Bodies. All Backgrounds.
BalletO is a student organization that aims to create a community around ballet in Oberlin where dancers with all bodies and from all backgrounds are welcome. We offer weekly ballet classes at varying levels taught by fellow students. We also host master classes taught by professional guest teachers and events such as film screenings. BalletO gives students, faculty/staff, and community members a chance to take class, teach class, perform, and choreograph in student-run shows.
No! The beginner ballet class is designed for those with no ballet experience at all. Some experience is recommended for higher-level classes, but not required. Experience is not required to perform either! Our SDS pieces are choreographed to accommodate all experience levels!
Attending BalletO classes requires no commitment. All classes are open, so you may attend as often as you'd like. If you choose to perform in SDS, there will be a commitment of 2 hours/week required for rehearsals.
Yes! BalletO has 1-2 pieces in Student Dance Showcase (SDS) each semester. If you are interested in performing with BalletO, attend the Trial Run held at the beginning of every semester. Performing is not a requirement to attend any BalletO events or classes.
No! Wear anything that you can move in and makes you feel comfortable!
The Trial Run is a non-audition held at the beginning of every semester required for those who wish to perform with BalletO, although attendance is not a compulsory commitment to performing. It is an opportunity for anyone interested to give the choreography a try and to give our choreographers an approximate headcount and a gauge of experience levels. If still interested in performing following the Trial Run, you will be asked to fill out a form that will serve as a formal commitment to rehearsing and performing with BalletO.
Yes! You do not have to be a part of the BalletO Board to teach a BalletO class. If you are interested in joining our rotation of teachers for the intermediate or advanced classes or even just in teaching one class, you can reach out to alowenth@oberlin.edu or mblandy@oberlin.edu.
