African and African-American Studies College Reading Lists
Harvard Gazette, Harvard Faculty Reading List on Issues of Race (June 2020)
(The Gazette asked Harvard faculty members to discuss the books they recommend for those who want to learn more about the issues and to expand their understanding of systemic racism, white privilege, and the long legacies of slavery and white supremacy in American history.)
Reading List from Harvard University, Department of African and African-American Studies Faculty
(The Department of African and African American Studies (AAAS) at Harvard University was forged through protracted struggle and in response to antiblack racism and the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Many in our community have devoted their scholarly lives to gaining a deep understanding of the causes of racial and related injustices and to identifying the appropriate responses to such oppression. In light of the killing of George Floyd and the protests his death has engendered, several AAAS faculty members have recommended a few works that they believe might help others understand and respond appropriately to our complex political moment, particularly with respect to racism, police violence, political resistance, and state repression of dissent).
Princeton University, Department of African-American Studies, Faculty Reading List
(Protests have erupted across the nation in the wake of recent police killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and the many other victims of police brutality. These demonstrations respond not just to these instances, but deep systemic inequity in policing and beyond. Below is a list of books that AAS faculty have written analyzing how systemic racism shapes America, contextualizing the latest uprisings).
