As a Maori Warden, you’ll have access to specific training and some certification. Becoming a volunteer as a Maori Warden can help you figure out what you’re good at and give you an idea of the future career path you’d like to take. It's a great way in developing the necessary skills and experience required in both formal employment outside the wardens and also on promotion up the ranks as a Maori Warden. You'll learn valuable life skills and specialist skills you can use to help others or in your chosen career path.

Do I need to be Maori to become a Maori Warden?
A) No our Maori Wardens come from all walks of life and the dynamic role of a Maori Warden with our communities has changed as such we welcome persons from all communities, races and walks of life to join us as a Maori Warden. Maori Wardens are here to support everyone Tangata Whenua (People of the land Maori) and Tauiwi (Non Maori)
Do I need to speak Te Reo Maori to become a Maori Warden?
A) No you do not need to speak Maori to become a Maori Warden, We are however committed to the revitalisation of our reo language as it was nearly lost and thus we will provide every support to our wardens on their journey to learning Te Reo Maori. We welcome speakers of other languages and backgrounds as Maori Wardens offer support to foreign nationals and refugees during refugee settlement.
Is there a commitment to attend regular trainings?
A) Yes there is a commitment that you will attend trainings as this is required for you to progress during your recruit / trainee phase and which must be completed prior to nomination for appointment as a Warranted Maori Warden.
What roles are available for me if I am unable to be involved in front line deployments?
A) Admin, Support Services, Technical Support / IT, Volunteer Drivers, Desk based work, Communications Centres and many more positions there is a position with Te Upoko Maori Wardens for everyone.
Are Maori Wardens Paid?
A) Maori Wardens are not paid employees and provide their time and services as volunteers however from time to time paid employment does come up and our wardens are remunerated for these contracts.
