3D modelling is the process of creating a three-dimensional representation of an object using specialised software.

3D models are used for a variety of mediums including video games, movies, architecture, illustration, engineering, and commercial advertising.

Laser cutting is a subtractive manufacturing process, meaning that it precisely cuts away material from the source to create the desired shape keeping it as bare-bones as possible. Laser cutting is taking material away while 3D printing is adding/creating material.

Create a fusion 360 account

Fusion 360 is the first 3D CAD, CAM, and CAE tool of its kind that connects your entire product development process in a single cloud-based platform that works on PC, Mac, and mobile devices.

You will need evidence of school ID -> Image on right shows where to find the student ID's. Please snipping tool ONLY YOUR OWN id, save in your H drive and then upload.

When creating an account your Name, Date of Birth, start date and end date need to match what is on the ID

Create your free account here.

Setting up fusion for class or home usE - Some good default settings so everything is the same for everyone.

A quick You-Tube get the students on the same page so they are looking at the same screen as the tutor. These are settings that a professional CAD person would use to set defaults. (It makes life easier...)

Getting started in Fusion360

Follow these easy tutorials to get you going quickly: First Steps in Fusion.

For some reason it start a few second in. Just restart the video.

Create a Cookie cutter or mould

using the 3D printer

You can either create a cookie cutter or a mould (think to freeze water in or melt chocolate).

We will then test these using play dough or you can actually make cookies!

Create a Keyring

using the Laser Cutter

Use Inkscape to create a simple yet fun design to laser cut!

Create a Trinket Dish by stacking

using the Laser Cutter

Using cardboard can be a very cheap and fast way to create prototypes to check details and sizes before you go ahead and create the your final outcome a more expensive material.

This tutorial shows you some tricks to help create the vectors needed for the laser cutter and how you can stack the material to create 3D objects.

Making Signs

using the Laser Cutter

Using cardboard can be a very cheap and fast way to create prototypes to check details and sizes before you go ahead and create the your final outcome a more expensive material.

This tutorial shows you some tricks to help create the vectors and using text needed for the laser cutter to make signs.

~~~ NZ Red Cross Donor Gifts ~~~
The NZ Red Cross is looking for some personalised gifts to give to their key donors. The problem being that the donors do not appreciate their money being spent on gifts back to them (quite reasonably!).
Come up with a design that is easy to produce using the laser cutter and the materials we have available.
*** Lights inspired by Culture ***
Use patterns / designs from a culture to create lamp that when on creates amazing light effects. Many cultures have light festivals and this could be something displayed at one of these in the future including the Christchurch inaugural Tīrama Mai lighting event that coincides with Matariki.
The image far right is a laser-cut LED lamps designed by New Zealander David Hakaraia. They look pretty standard when the light is turned off, but when light hits the lampshade it reveals intricately etched patterns that tell the story of the designer’s Maori heritage.
SUBMIT YOUR BEST CREATIONS HERE
(Max of 1 from each task)
Include both an image of your 'working file' (use snipping tool to capture your fusion work) and a photo of your outcome.
Digital Technologies | Progress Outcomes
Designing and developing Digital Outcomes FOR DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES
At the end of this topic students will have had the opportunity to cover;
  • make decisions about creating, manipulating, storing, retrieving, sharing, and testing digital content for a specific purpose, given particular parameters, tools, and techniques PO2
  • understand that digital devices impact on humans and society and that both the devices and their impact change over time PO2
  • identify the specific role of components in a simple input-process-output system and how they work together, and they recognise the "control role” that humans have in the system PO2
  • select from an increasing range of applications and file types to develop outcomes for particular purposes PO2
  • follow a defined process to design, develop, store, test, and evaluate digital content to address given contexts or issues, taking into account immediate social, ethical, and end-user considerations PO3
  • identify the key features of selected software and choose the most appropriate software and file types to develop and combine digital content PO3
  • understand the role of operating systems in managing digital devices, security, and application software and are able to apply file management conventions using a range of storage devices PO3
  • understand that with storing data comes responsibility for ensuring security and privacy PO3
