CASTING CALL POLICIES
Tisch is committed to casting a diverse company of talent for every project. It’s our policy that eligible students of all gender identities, races, ethnicities, abilities and disabilities, and cultural backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply for all projects posted through the Student Collab Hub.
To post a casting call on the Tisch Student Collab Hub, you must be committed to casting projects without regard to race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender. In special cases where a lack of visual accuracy might risk the misrepresentation of the project in regard to social issues of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender, the director may cast the project as intended as long as the following Student Collab Hub policies are followed:
Please follow these guidelines when making your casting call:
After the general description of the project, go onto short but telling character descriptions of the roles you are looking to cast. This is called a “character breakdown.” Include in this a description of character indicating the character’s race, ethnicity, nationality, age range and/or gender only if absolutely a script requirement. Please use the language “Seeking performers able to portray…” Be specific in describing the role, not the actor. Be well defined with the emotions and “type” you are seeking. Be broad with age ranges and ethnicities. Unless it is actually mentioned in the script or required by the brand because of the product or scenario, ethnicity, hair color, and eye color are not really important. All language used in your casting call should be inclusive. Avoid exclusive phrases such as “except” etc. Don’t box yourself into an idea. Let talent show you how they’re interpreting your opportunity and be open to new ideas.
IMPORTANT:
Never use stereotypes of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, age, or ability/disability, or insensitive
character descriptions under any circumstances. Avoid use of slang to describe characters.
Example of an acceptable Character Breakdown:
ARNOLD (16) – male lead. A classic science wiz who is absolutely happy with being one. He is
also sweet, very funny and, if you look closely, quite cute. He loves all things related to
astronomy.
The Student Collab Hub reserves the right to decline any project listing, at its discretion.
