Unit Objectives

By the end of this unit, students will be able to: 

• Compare and contrast differences between common-practice "classical" harmonic syntax, jazz, and popular music. 

• Notate and identify standard 12-bar blues progressions and variations in popular music. 

• Identify and compose common chord progressions in popular music, including the double plagal, extended plagal, hopscotch, singer-songwriter, puff, lament, and modal shuttles. 

• Describe how artists use chord inversions and stepwise basslines to construct progressions and create harmonic movement.
