During the Clinical Practicum and Field Placement Sequence (I through V), clinical and professional practice competencies are assessed through benchmarks according to ASHA’s Standards and Code of Ethics, case management, diagnostic/evaluative skills, and clinical writing abilities. A PSP (Tier 2 of the Support & Accountability Process) may be implemented and developed at any point during the Clinical Practicum and Field Placement Sequence if a student is having difficulty during the field placement experience or is in jeopardy of not passing (see CALIPSO Rating Scale).
If a field placement supervisor and/or CFPT member report that a student is demonstrating difficulty in any of their clinical and professional competencies, the student may be recommended for a Practicum Success Plan (PSP).
PSP goals are developed during a multi-tiered collaborative and supportive process designed to strengthen student knowledge, clinical and/or professional competencies and overseen by the clinical supervisor and the CFPT. The individualized PSP goals are designed to increase the student’s level of independence in the areas of noted difficulty through strategies such as, but not limited to:
Reviewing relevant client information to create session plans
Researching and implementing evidence-based practice methods
Reviewing relevant course content or meeting with course lead instructors
Direct modeling of therapeutic strategies by supervisors
Role-playing professional practice scenarios to improve specific skills
Self-reflection through journaling
Reviewing and implementing supervisory feedback in a timely manner
Students & supervisors will assess PSP goal progress on a weekly basis and communicate this progress to the CFPT through a shared tracker.
In order to advance in the Clinical Practicum and Field Placement Sequence, students must successfully meet the following:
All goals of their PSP plan by each of their established deadlines
Maintenance of those PSP goals throughout the remainder of the term without requiring the PSP be reinstated
Receive a passing final CALIPSO rating score
If the aforementioned is not met, a student will need to repeat that associated Practicum experience and Practicum course.
