The CALIPSO Rating Scale is a five-point rating scale designed by the members of the NYU CSD Clinic Committee to meet the standards set forth by the Council for Clinical Certification in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CFCC). It is used by field placement supervisors to evaluate students' clinical and professional competencies at both the midpoint and endpoint of the semester. It is shared with both students and field supervisors and is also located on the evaluation form in CALIPSO.
This rating scale defines the percentage of time that the student is independently demonstrating various clinical and professional competencies when being evaluated by the supervising speech-language pathologist. It is important to note that the five-point rating scale includes increments of .25 (e.g. 1.25, 1.5, etc.). The CALIPSO Rating Scale Breakdown is a resource to further guide supervisors on providing students with the accurate rating and increment associated with each percentage.
Field placement supervisors use this rating scale to complete a midterm and final CALIPSO evaluation and must review the outcome with their student(s). See CALIPSO Walkthroughs. This allows the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders to track how each student is progressing and performing across various clinical and professional competencies at their site. Additionally, students will be able to identify areas of strength as well as areas which require improvement.
If deemed necessary by the Director of Clinical Education and/or the Clinical Field Placement Team OR if you provide a rating score at or below the following ranges at midterm, it may result in a student being referred to the Student Progress Committee or placed on a PSP.
Practicum III Treatment: Rating score of 3.36 or below in CALIPSO
Field Placement IV Pediatrics: Rating score of 3.76 or below in CALIPSO
Field Placement V Adults: Rating score of 3.76 or below in CALIPSO
This is done on a case-by-case basis and is in collaboration with all involved parties. This may include the Clinical Field Placement Team, Academic Advising, Practicum Instructor, field placement supervisor, and/or Director of Clinical Education.
The five point evaluation ratings are calculated by taking the total points (all sections included), divided by the number of items rated in each section, which then provides a final total evaluation rating score. If the student has more clinical hours with one supervisor over another supervisor, the amount of hours earned with each supervisor will be weighed accordingly.
Throughout the student’s Clinical Practicum and Field Placement Sequence, students are interacting with other members of the department (e.g. Field Placement Team, Academic Advising, etc.), therefore, these interactions, both positive and negative, will be communicated to the Director of Clinical Education and/or Director of Field Placement Programs. Upon their review, the midterm and/or final evaluation rating score may be further adjusted to reflect positive or negative Professional behaviors. This adjustment will be reflected in the “adjustment box” within the student’s midterm and/or final evaluation located in CALIPSO and only on a case-by-case basis.
