Inaccurate pricing strategies and pricing errors have a significant impact on revenue. It is imperative to have proactive tracking and efficient error detection mechanisms. However, the existing methodology employed by Dell Technologies' Services Pricing team was fragmented and time-consuming. The team relied on ad hoc requests and conducted analysis and visualization using MS Excel, resulting in limitations and inefficiencies that required improvement.
We developed a comprehensive and user-friendly Tableau dashboard that provides a consolidated view of Services Pricing performance over the past five weeks and five quarters. This dashboard facilitates data visualization of key metrics across all portfolios on three levels, enabling pricing managers to slice and dice the performance of products across different quarters and regions and minimize reliance on ad hoc inquiries. It promotes proactive decision-making by allowing pricing managers to detect business anomalies and identify areas for improvement in the current pricing strategies.
As part of the requirements-gathering process, we engaged with Stakeholders and pricing analysts to identify the current process's business pain points and determine the key metrics commonly analyzed and tracked by the services pricing team.
Requirements gathering across 3 global regions
The requirements-gathering process revealed a common thread of concerns between stakeholders and analysts across the three regions. The insights are summarised below.
The insights allowed us to narrow our solution design and summarise the key requirements for the dashboard. Broadly, the dashboard needed to be:
User-friendly interface that requires limited technical proficiency
Have multiple levels of view - Product group, Line of Business (LOB) level, and Series level
Coincide data refresh for the interface with Revenue Database refresh time
Display all key business metrics across regions, countries, channels, etc.
The designing phase began by outlining the following data flow:
Data pipeline
We then created the following wireframes for the primary views of our dashboard.
Each step of the design was then implemented using the respective softwares and tools. The key features of the dashboard include:
A tableau dashboard view that provides an interactive view to track commonly used metrics on Quarter level and Week level.
The table displays the view in 3 different levels- starting from the topmost overall view to the most basic, fundamental view.
Refreshes every week to ensure data accuracy.
For data confidentiality, below are mock snippets of the actual views that were implemented.
Mocks views
The dashboard was then presented to the Stakeholders for feedback.
After incorporating the suggested changes and applying Visual Design principles, the dashboard was pushed to production.
The Portfolio Views project is currently being utilized by Dell as a live project. The Dashboard effectively maps and presents all the necessary parameters, satisfying the teams with its insightful analysis capabilities. With automated data refresh and validation, data accuracy is ensured, making it ideal for real-time usage. Pricing managers can now make pricing decisions directly without the need for ad hoc requests, while analysts can allocate their time to more intricate tasks and analyses. Overall, the portfolio views project significantly enhances the pricing team's efficiency.
