The safety of individual children and the broader community is enhanced when parents are equipped with skills to create a protective environment. Parent-focused behavioral interventions, such as Smart Parents- Safe and Healthy Kids., could fill a significant gap in the prevention of child sexual abuse. In partnership with the Parents as Teachers National Center, this project tests the effectiveness of the Smart Parents. on parents' CSA-related awareness and protective behaviors compared to Parents as Teachers as usual. If effective, this prevention approach can be replicated in other widely disseminated parent education programs, ultimately reducing overall rates of child sexual abuse.

Smart Parent- Safe and Healthy Kids is a behavioral intervention designed to equip parents with essential concepts to prevent CSA. The program focuses on three key skills:
Healthy Child Sexual Development: Accurate information about typical healthy sexual development throughout childhood, as well as indications of potentially problematic behaviors.
Parent-Child Communication: Practical yet vital skills to promote open and honest parent-child communication, particularly surrounding sexual topics.
Child Safety: Strategies to help create protective environments for children at home, around others, and online, ultimately protecting them from harm.
