1 Prompt for quick writing in Chat : What is reading? How do people in different cultures read? Out loud? Silently? Where do they read? In public? In private? Collectively? What is the most commonly read text in your household?
When you do your quick writing, start with about 100 words inside the thread in RLAC discussion that is created for Quick Writing 1. You do not have to answer all the questions, just choose the one that is most interesting to you. After you write your quick writing, check back and make sure that you respond to a couple classmates' thoughts by @-tagging them. There is no limit to how much you can interact, but be respectful of others desire to express their ideas. Please complete your quick writing by 0600, 10 September.
Remember you can do your quick writing from chat.google.com or also from the Chat app for devices.
2 Create a Google Site of your own. There are many videos that walk you through the steps, for example, here and here. If you find another one that you like in English or a language you understand, share it with the class in the "RLAC general" room.
Give your site the name DHS [the avatar name you choose]. Create a few pages and title them. Try out adding some images that you yourself have taken (or others from unsplash.com). Don't use google image search, but refer to the stack tab of this syllabus for places where you can get free and open content.
Send me the URL at the Form on this very same page by 2359, 9 Sept.

Discussion of speed reading
1 Read these articles before your quick writing: "Speed Reading" ; "How Many Books Will You Read Before You Die?"
2 Prompt for Quick Writing in Chat: Why do you think different cultures read in such different quantities? Why do some people want to read more? Why does speed reading seem to be so important for some? What is the difference between speed reading and skimming or summarizing? Do you think a computer can speed up our reading? What do you think of the expression “so many books, so little time”?
You do not have to answer all the questions, just choose the one that is most interesting to you. Follow the same instructions as 8 September about length, responding to your classmates and giving everyone space to respond. Please complete your quick writing by 0600, 15 September. We will not typically have two quick writings in a week, but since we are starting out synchronously and the course is larger, it will take the place of smaller discussion groups.
