The final assignment is a "deep dive" into one text, the very same text that you chose for Assignment #2. In this respect you could say that the final assignment builds on the second assignment.
Using one text as your focal point (and comparing it to any other number of texts by the same author or in the same genre), I would like you to combine any of the methods that we have encountered this semester to do an in-depth analysis.
By way of reminder, the techniques that we have looked at this semester include the following:
concordancing / density plots (AntConc/AntCorGen)
sentence length detection / most distinctive words / MFWs / collocation / keyword in context (Voyant)
distinctive words / MFWs (R)
stylistic classification (Stylo R)
sentiment analysis (R)
[parts of speech (Hemingway) -- used by one group for their movement interview analysis]
Some questions that you might consider looking at :
what is the relationship between frequency and sentiment?
what has been the most productive tool for answering the questions you have about your text of choice?
what is the difference between an analysis of a text based on its function words and its "meaning-bearing" words?
what is the difference between most frequent words (MFWs) and most distinctive words of a text compared with a corpus?
How/why did you move between the different tools?
Like Assignments #1 and #2, your final assignment should have a visual component that is generated from the tools, but you can also include images (from the movie remake of the book, or on topics evoked in the text, or drawings you make).
One key difference of the final assignment, is that you should write about 80% of the final assignment together. The other 20% (approximately) should be an individually composed statement in which you reflect on what you brought specifically to the assignment, how you have learned to think about texts with the aid of computer assisted analysis and what new kinds of analysis you would like to continue to learn about. There are no specific word limits, but probably between 1250-1500 words total. There are no specific number of visuals required, but probably more than 5.
Please post your final assignment on your course site. Be sure to include a link to the book you are working on, to any appropriate readings and any code if you have rewritten any for the purposes of analysis.
What this can look like in practice is : the same text on both group members' site, followed by an individual statement on each group member's site. Be sure to mark clearly the individual statement.
Another key difference of the final assignment, is that you should prepare a short video that explains what you did in the process of your group "deep dive". It should be in the form of a voice over presentation of maximum 5 minutes. No faces, but any and all creativity is welcome.
Due dates:
5 December - the written portion of your assignment
7 December - the video portion of your assignment (please do a recording using a screen recorder such as QuickTime and place it in the folder created for them in our shared drive.)
