The result of the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS) in Nainokanoka Ward of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is shown below. The poor outcome proves that the Nainokanoka ward is indeed a promising point of need for this project.
households that experience anxiety and uncertainty about food supply
households that experience insufficient quality in terms of variety and preferences
households that experience insufficient food intake
Global acute malnutrition (GAM) is the prevalence, or proportion, of children ages 6-59 months in a given population considered severely acutely malnourished (SAM) or moderately acutely malnourished (MAM).
Phase 1 (Acceptable) – GAM is less than 5%
Phase 2 (Alert) – GAM is 5 - 9.9%
Phase 3 (Serious) – GAM is 10 - 14.9%
Phase 4 (Critical) – GAM is 15 - 29.9%. The mortality and morbidity levels are elevated or increasing. Individual food consumption is likely to be compromised.
Phase 5 (Extremely Critical) – GAM is 30%. Categorized as famine.
Based on WHO criteria, the prevalence of Global Acute Malnutrition in infants aged 0 - 5 years in the Ngorongoro District is higher than 15%. This is categorized as a “very high/critical” public health concern.
Government prohibits crop cultivation within the NCA to preserve wildlife. Hence, communities are reliant on crops from neighboring districts.
In the majority Maasai culture, cattle-related produce (e.g. meat and milk) are heavily preferred to other food sources. As such, nutritional food items such as chickens, eggs and vegetables are neglected.
From the above reasons, communities in the Ngorongoro District are the projected points of need. Hence, our plan focuses on the Nainokanoka ward within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA).
