November 2015 saw the introduction of the NYU School of Professional Studies Spirit Week and the launching of the #WeAreSPS campaign. The SPS student leaders wanted to celebrate their school pride and share our history and spirit with the NYU community.
This week-long programming of events culminated with the SPS Finish Line 5K. During this week, volunteers collected items for a time Capsule, paper chains, hygiene kit, and food drive. Newly created SPS t-shirt and swag were given away to students to show their SPS pride.
Daily themed events included Spirit Day, Wellness Day, Professional Day, TBT Day (Throw Back Thursday), Unity Day, Community Service Day, and Raise Day aka Race Day.
This Spirit Week also saw the introduction of the very first SPS Global Village.
All week-long at the SPS Building, 7 East 12th Street, Midtown Center, and Woolworth Building, student leaders and volunteers staffed Spirit Week information tables to spread the SPS spirit.
They collected items for the Time Capsule, Paper Chains, Hygiene Kits, and Food Drive. SPS swag and T-shirts were also distributed.
The SPS Time Capsule was a collection of items to be placed in a "time capsule" which was presented to former Dean, Dennis Di Lorenzo. The Time Capsule is scheduled to be opened in 10 years (the year 2025) on Alumni Day. Mark your calendars.
Items encouraged to be placed in the Time Capsule was to represent the daily lives of the SPS community and those that who created them; such as personal notes, pictures and documents.
Possible items entered into the Time Capsule; Syllabus from your favorite class, Pics from SPS events, Flash Drive/CD with music, SPS memento (pen/shirt/etc.), Swag from SPS event, Newspaper Clippings, Business Cards, Event Tickets, and anything else SPS related.
Students were encouraged to share (write) their favorite SPS moments which was added to Paper Chain display on Unity Day later that week.
Examples for the Paper Chain were shout-outs to professors, quotes from their heroes/people who inspire them, SPS memory (first day, favorite class, school activities, etc.)
As part of a Community Service Initiative, collection boxes were available at each SPS location to collect items in order to create Hygiene Kits for NY Rescue Missions to distribute to the homeless.
Items collected were Toothbrushes, Toothpaste, Deodorant, Combs, Shampoo, Soap, Razors, Lotion, Hand Sanitizer, Mouth Wash, and Feminine Products.
Another Community Service Initiative was a Food Drive. Donations were given to City Harvest. Through the Community Service initiatives, the #SPSserves was born and developed into an SPS Community Service Committee.
Food Drive Items collected were canned fruit & veggies, peanut butter, and boxed Mac & Cheese, and Cereal just to name a few.
SPS Spirit Week kicked off with the first ever history making community photo. Students, faculty, and staff were invited to wear their #WeAreSPS t-shirts and assemble in Washington Square Park on campus in front of the George Washington Arch. SPS Photo Frame gifts were given to the first 300 participants wearing their SPS t-shirt.
Spirit Week 2015 marked the introduction of the first ever SPS Global Village. The goal was to "Travel the World in 30 Minutes". The "Global Village" showcased our multinational SPS community by offering booths which provide information, food, freebies, and more from each country represented.
This event was such a huge success and popular that it went on to become an annual tradition at SPS. Learn more about SPS Global Village and how you can share your culture.
This event is co-sponsored by the International Club, the Student Association for Global Affairs (SAGA), and Office of Global Services.
The first Wellness Day was sponsored by the NYU Health Center and coordinated by the Spirit Week committee.
Live Well Booth was available in the lobby at the SPS Building. Students were given health tips, swag and snacks.
Free Flu Shots (for students) were given to encourage a safer NYU community as we entered the flu season.
Stressbusters Massages--students and staff were given a 5 minute back and neck massage.
The first Professional Day was co-sponsored by the Wasserman Center @ SPS and coordinated by the Spirit Week committee.
Most of the day featured a LinkedIn Photo Booth in which students could have a professional photo taken for their LinkedIn profiles. Photos were taken by Stephen Bleuler & Garvin Reade.
Resume Review by the Wasseman Center @ SPS was offered to students.
Building Your LinkedIn Profile Presentation was a workshop for those who wanted to create a LinkedIn profile or are new to LinkedIn and would like to improve upon their profile. This workshop was facilitated by Julbert Abraham, CEO of Abraham Global Marketing (also known as "The LinkedIn Guy") who showed key components to create an effective profile.
Throw Back Thursday was dedicated to celebrating SPS memories. On display was an art instillation chronicling SPS'S history called "SPS Through the Decades".
Instagram Selfie Photo Booth offered students a fun way to TBT to the 1930's with photos of them taken with an SPS Instagram frame in from of Step & Repeat.
An Instagram Contest offered students prizes for the "most school spirit" utilizing props in a photo, as well as the most people. Tag #WeAreSPS to enter the contest.
Unity Day held a mix and mingle (aka SPS Pasta Party) to bring SPS together Students, Faculty, Staff, and Alumni in unity to celebrate the wonderful week of SPS pride thus far.
Pre-5K T-Shirt and race Bib were distributed along with pasta for race participants to "carb up" along with a Live Well Photo Booth .
SPS Paper Chain of Memories were assembled and displayed in the lobby of the SPS Building.
The Time Capsule was present to the Dean by SPS Student Councils Presidents. To be opened 2025.
Volunteers gathered on a Saturday for Community Service Day to helped assemble over 100 Hygiene Kits for the homeless to be donated to the NY Rescue Mission.
Students were encouraged to wear their SPS t-shirts to gain FREE entry to the NYU Women’s and Men’s Basketball Games held at Coles Sports Center on that day.
Spirit Week Raise Day, also referred to as Race Day, culminated with first ever "Finish Line 5K". SPS students, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of NYUSPS participated in the Finish Line 5K.
The goal of the Finish Line 5K was to raise funds for additional SPS scholarships for students who were about to complete their NYUSPS Diplomas and needed funds to cross the finish line. Funds raised were designated for supporting scholarships at NYUSPS, which help students to complete their education and get off to a running start. This initiative was the brain-child of former Dean, Denis DiLorenzo.
