Academic Advisement

BS Students

Academic advising is a student-driven process in which students are empowered to identify and explore opportunities both in and out of the classroom to help them reach their academic and personal goals during their time at NYU. Advising sessions are meetings in which students and their Advisor will engage in discussions around a student’s interests and goals, course selection, degree requirements, and any academic difficulty. Many students choose to minor, double major, and study away, all of which require careful planning and are often a focus of advising meetings. Advisors will discuss the ways in which students might proceed to maximize each semester, craft a meaningful course of study, and create a path to graduation. Students are required to meet with their advisors prior to registering for courses every semester. After meeting with your advisor, your “advising hold” will be removed and you will be able to register for classes.

Practicum Faculty Advisors

When students are in a practicum placement the Faculty Advisor serves as the student’s as well as the School’s liaison to the practicum placement agency. The Practicum Faculty Advisor also assigns the final grade for Practicum Instruction I, II, III, and IV. Practicum Faculty Advisors are assigned by the Assistant Dean of Practicum Education and Community Partnerships. For some students their Practicum Faculty Advisor is the same person as their Practice instructor, as noted below:
