In the role of Data Scientist, learners will propose and run an experimental research study. They will engage in a process of scientific inquiry and learn about experimental design.
Minimum recommended class time: 45 hours & Recommended support: Level 3
This track stands independently and can work alongside the MindHive Program to support students.
James spends a few days exploring different data types, diving into EEG data, and playing with ideas for how to visualize brainwave data.
In week 2, the teacher introduces MindHive and the main project that students will work on for the next two-three weeks-- Designing and running an experimental research study investigating brain waves.
James spends this week drafting research questions, doing background research, and constructing a synthesis statement.
In week 3, students review feedback from mentors and work on their experimental research design.
James engages in constructing an hypothesis, identifying and operationalizing variables, choosing a within-subjects or between-subjects design, and outlining a recruitment strategy.
At the end of this week, James and his team do a test run of their design to make sure they can collect data.
In this session, James and his team set up their data collection station and students from another class at their school come in and participate in their study.
James ensures that participant data is recorded through YouQuantified.
James and his team combine participant data sets. Next they describe and compare the dependent variable across their two conditions.
At the end of class 13, the group confirms or disconfirms their hypothesis, constructs data visualizations, and reflects on the limitations and significance of their findings.
Finally, James and his team work on synthesizing their research study and finidngs in the form of a conference poster.
