In this assignment, we explored the relationship between texture, shape, and how a sculpture can both assist and be enhanced by light.
Mobius Strip
Our initial goal was to experiment with the transformation between internal and external space based on our understanding of light and space. We chose the Mobius strip as the base for our sculpture because of its unique continuous form, which blurs the distinction between inside and outside. As we developed the concept, the Mobius strip’s symbolism of infinity became a central part of our expression.
Soft Sculpture
When we first imagined sculpting with light, we initially envisioned a solid, rigid form. However, in an effort to step outside our comfort zone and experiment with more unconventional materials, we decided to create a soft sculpture. We wrapped hard wire with yarn to provide structure while introducing softness and texture. To add volume and shape, we incorporated fabric, allowing us to explore how light interacts with flexible, organic forms.
Formation
Because of the unique qualities of fabric, hanging the object allows for better angles and a more engaging viewing experience.
Color choice
While experimenting with different colors would be a great way to practice using RGB light, we didn’t see a strong reason to change the lighting in a way that would align with our concept.
Purposefulness
We had too many ideas we wanted to explore in this assignment, and in the end, the things we tried didn’t fully come together. In the future, it would be better to stay more focused and intentional when combining different elements in one project.
