While below are the HESA specific study abroad programs, HESA students take advantage of all the study abroad opportunities there are to offer.

J-Term Study Abroad

(Taken in January, these intensive, graduate-level study abroad courses count toward your Spring course load and tuition)

India: Global Perspectives in Higher Education

  • Faculty Lead: Teboho Moja & Ann Marcus

  • This course explores India's higher education system as a case study. Visits will include lectures from scholars and visits to Indian colleges and universities to meet with faculty, administrators and students. Additional sessions will be held with scholars and local experts on higher education in India to explore current issues and government priorities. Topics will include curricular opportunities; college admissions requirements; distribution of students by class and ethnicity; college climate and student services.


Spring Break Study Abroad

Ghana: Global Perspectives in Higher Education

  • Faculty Lead: Teboho Moja

  • The course will be offered as an intensive spring break course with additional sessions offered during the spring semester. The course covers the study of student related issues in Africa and uses Ghana as a case study and will include an in-depth case study of Ghana’s higher education system, its administration and students in the system. Additionally, sessions will be held with scholars and local experts on higher education in Africa to explore current issues and government policy priorities.

Summer Study Abroad

Brazil: Race, Class, and Equity in Higher Education

    • Faculty Lead: Erich Dietrich

    • This course analyzes the emergence and impact of race- and social-class-based affirmative action policies in Brazil, placing the Brazilian situation in the context of contemporary debates about equity and higher education.

South Africa: Educational and Social Reform

  • Faculty Lead: Teboho Moja

  • This course examines South Africa’s post-apartheid social and educational reforms. Through visits to schools, universities, and communities in rural and urban settings, you’ll learn from people who are grappling with reform issues on a daily basis, explore the country’s diverse cultures, and gain an understanding of the challenges faced by its leaders and policymakers.
