What is fieldwork?
Students who wish to supplement their current Graduate Assistantship are able to do a fieldwork placement in another office, either at NYU or another institution, as a means to diversify your experiences.
This is set up by the student and is typically for 8-10 hours a week, unpaid but is for 3 credits, on top of the student’s assistantship.
Students cannot do fieldwork during their first semester in the program and they should talk to their faculty advisor if they are interested in pursuing one.
How does one acquire fieldwork?
Check in with your direct site supervisor and receive permission before applying for a new position. Make sure you and your current supervisor and future supervisor are on the same page regarding your commitment to either positions. Keep in mind of your self-care as well so you don’t overcommit.
Let your advisor know you’re looking into fieldwork and they can help you register for the three credit course
Alternatively, you can also choose to reach out to offices that you have an interest in and ask if they are willing to let you shadow/work there for a few hours a week. This would not necessarily be paid but can still give you a bit of experience in a new area.
