Once the course planning phase is complete, it's time to turn your attention to course management. The information below is designed to assist Gallatin faculty as they move through the semester, from managing enrollment, to providing accommodations, to canceling class and/or office hours, to grading and course evaluations.
There may be times when instructors have to cancel class and/or office hours due to weather, illness, or other personal emergency. Please follow the guidance below to notify the Office of Faculty Affairs (facultyservices.gallatin@nyu.edu), as well as your students.
University closures: In the event of weather or other emergencies that could affect NYU classes, scheduled events, or meetings, information about closings and changes to University operations are posted on the NYU Alerts page and appear as a banner on NYU’s website. NYU will also send messages via text, email, or voice message in case of an emergency.
Canceling class: If an instructor must cancel class due to disrupted transportation or hazardous travel conditions, the instructor should follow the steps outlined above.
Reasonable accommodations: Faculty should also provide options for student commuters who are unable to attend class. This may include reasonable accommodations for missed work and (where possible) exams, as well as lecture notes or videos posted on NYU Brightspace. See Attendance & Accommodations for guidance on reasonable accommodations.
Expectations for students: It is also expected that students should provide instructors with advance notice if they need to miss class due to disrupted transportation or hazardous travel conditions. Students should submit, without significant delay, assignments that were to be handed in during the class session.
Notify the Office of Faculty Affairs: If you need to cancel a class or office hours for illness or other personal emergency, please send an email to facultyservices.gallatin@nyu.edu.
Notify your students: If you are able to communicate to students, please notify them of the cancellation. See instructions for emailing students in the Class Roster section of Registration & Enrollment. Faculty should give students as much advance notice as possible (preferably not less than three hours), taking into account that student commuters’ travel may be affected by last-minute cancellations. If you are unable to communicate with students, please let the Office of Faculty Affairs know and they will notify students.
Signage: The Office of Faculty Affairs will also post a cancellation sign on your classroom or office door, in the event that students did not read their email messages.
Scheduling a makeup class: The Office of Faculty Affairs will send an email to faculty mid-way through the semester to see if you plan to hold an extra class or makeup class during finals week.
If your illness is prolonged and requires cancellation of more than one class, or if you need special accommodation, please contact the Senior Director of Faculty & Academic Affairs, Marissa Mattes (marissa.mattes@nyu.edu). Gallatin may be able to help (by finding a substitute teacher, by reimbursing transportation costs, etc.) during your illness and recovery.
