Why did you choose NYU?:
"The Big Apple, of course! I chose NYU because of two reasons: the world-class education combined with the opportunity to gain real-life experience in the most dynamic and interesting city in America."
What do you like about the HESA program?
"The program places a strong emphasis on practical education, which I really appreciate. Everything that we learn draws right back to your working experience in higher education, making the lessons feel concrete and valuable."
What advice would you give about Recruitment Days?
"Take a deep breath and know that it's going to be okay! The sites are just as interested in getting to know you as you are interested in meeting them. At the end of the day, I would most recommend that you know what you're looking for in an internship position because the practical experience is just as part of your education as the classroom."
Name: Jack Herdman | Pronouns: He/Him/His |Year: Full-time First Year Student
Assistantship: Student Engagement Assistant at the Juilliard School
Why did you choose NYU?:
"NYU was always my dream school mainly because of the connection with the greatest city of the planet. The school is quite litterally built directly into the city, and is fueled by it. The most interesting and amazing people on the planet always find their way to New York, and the people you will meet at NYU will only make you believe that more."
What do you like about the HESA program?
"The program is real. The experience that you get is significant, and you are given a real opportunity to get hands on with the field. The classes understand the roles that you have as a worker, and reflect on those experiences, and what you learn in class inspires your work capabilities. This all leads to a cycle of success."
What advice would you give about Recruitment Days?
"My biggest piece of advice is to not worry if you don't match. Some of you who will come to the program will not match. I did not, and I was stressed out of my mind about that. And I know that you may go through the same thing. But the placement I have now, I honestly don't think I would want to be anywhere else. And if I had matched I wouldn't be getting this opportunity."
Name: Jennifer Du | Pronouns: She/Her/Hers |Year: Full-time Second Year Student
Assistantship: Graduate Assistant, Wasserman Center for Development Grad Team
Why did you choose NYU?:
"NYU is located in NEW YORK CITY! As someone who always wants to live on Broadway, Location is a big thing that contributes to my decision. NYC also tells a signature story of living a life in the U.S., that you cannot find anywhere else. Besides location, NYU is a place that really cares who you are as individual, and respects where you are coming from, what are some things you carry with you. Instead of thinking about fitting you into their space, they think about how you may contribute your uniqueness to the diversity in NYU. In NYU, you can be whoever you want to be, and people care about you as individuals, and the people here all want to support you to become the one you want to be."
What do you like about the HESA program?
"The best thing I love about this program is the internship embedded with the curriculum. Instead of just going to class, we practice what we’ve learned in a real practical space. Today in classrooms, we talked about issues and things that need to be addressed, and tomorrow, we go to our place and put thoughts into action. In HESA, I was able to be a part of the amazing cohort, where we all dedicated ourselves to doing something and better supporting the students we serve. It’s always exciting when you see you are not the only one trying this hard to put thoughts into action."
What advice would you give about Recruitment Days?
"Be prepared, be energetic, and be yourself. Even if you don’t have a lot of time to prepare, make sure you know who you are talking to. Even a 5min research about the office prior to the interview will be super helpful! Also, make sure you are energized and really speaking about your authentic interest. Recruitment day might be a tough day since you need to go through many rounds of interviews, but all recruiters participating in the recruitment day will understand what you're going through. Relax, it’s ok!"

Assistantship: Full-time NYU College Advising Corps College Adviser
Why did you choose NYU?:
"I wasn’t actually interested in getting my masters anytime soon after graduation. But after applying for this position and NYU taking me, I took advantage of applying and BAM! I’m a grad student. If it wasn’t for this program, I honestly don’t know when I would’ve gone back to school."
What do you like about the HESA program?
"I like that our program feels very cohesive and everyone is approachable. Our conversations may primarily focus on higher education, but there are a variety of topics that can go completely beyond that. These people are passionate in their fields, and you can feel that from your peers and professors."
What advice would you give about Recruitment Days?
"Take your time to think about the question, and then make sure you're actually answering the question. Think before speaking, even if that means awkward silence. Avoid as many "ums", "uhs", and "likes" as possible. Show your personality in your answering (if the situation allows for it). Sit up straight! Show confident body language! Slow down when speaking. I tend to talk quicker when I'm nervous, so slowing down can help you be, and seem, more confident."

What advice would you give about Recruitment Days?
"Recruitment days are overwhelming but remember you're interviewing them as much as they are you. Take time to think about what you want out of your program and your assistantship because this is about what you want not what you think the school is looking for! "

Why did you choose NYU?:
"I went to college at a university that housed NYU HESA graduate assistants and worked closely with them and a large number of other HESA alumni. They not only were super helpful in my leadership and personal development as an undergraduate, but were incredibly involved and supportive as I applied and interviewed for graduate programs. Because of my experiences with them, I felt that NYU would be a great fit, and that I would be lucky to continue working with other past and current HESA students. Everyone I have encountered in the program - faculty, staff, and students - have a genuine passion for what they do, and I find that incredibly inspiring."
What do you like about the HESA program?
"I like the program for the opportunity to work and learn simultaneously. I’ve found so many of my classes helpful in my internships. Plus, we have a great set of current students who are invested in this work and I have learned so much from everyone else in the program. There’s a lot of opportunities to focus on what you’re interested in and learn either individually or as part of a group. I feel well prepared for not only a career, but to continue a lifetime of learning as a practitioner."
What advice would you give about Recruitment Days?
"Recruitment Days is a two way interview! Not only are sites interviewing you, but you’re interviewing them to find a fit. Try to ask questions that will help you understand the supervisor’s style and the institutional culture, and how both of those align with your interests, preferences, and style."
