It is important to have a social media/marketing strategy in mind when you begin posting on various platforms. Which channels will your library focus on? What types of content are expected? What events and programs will you feature? Part of the agreed-upon strategy should include the workflow for creating content and posting. Some of the most popular tools are linked here.
Meta describes its Business Suite application as “a free tool to manage and track all your business insights and activities across your Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger accounts.” Since it is free, it is worth learning as much about its functionality as possible and using it daily for scheduling, keeping track of comments and messages and viewing insights. It can have several administrators attached to it and allows cross-posting to both Facebook and Instagram. For larger teams and multiple accounts, however, it might be worthwhile trying one of the subscription based tools like Hootsuite.
Affordable scheduling and posting platform. Ranges from free version (limited features) for small business or new to social media organizations to $129/month for larger marketing agencies or businesses. Free version includes access to the AI Assistant.
Sprout Social is an expensive way to manage scheduling. Pricing ranges from $249/month to $499/month. Most public libraries do not have the budget for this or the need for the features included in this pricing. There is a free trial, but no free version of the product.
Hootsuite is a popular social media management tool for libraries although it does cost $99/month for the basic membership. There is no free plan beyond the 30 day free trial. Pricing plans including a comparison of what is available at each level can be found on the site.
The project management tool, Airtable, can also be used for social media management through its social media template. The free version does not allow users to utilize extensions and only allows up to 1000 records to be created but it could be useful if the organization or individual is already using Airtable for other tasks. There is a learning curve to Airtable that might be a barrier to getting up and running quickly.
