You are in the right place if:
You are not sure what to do or where to begin.
You are reasonably certain a Level 1 is necessary.
Or, you know what to do and just need the forms.
Question: "Did the student make a threat or do they pose a threat"?
Although both interactions can be alarming, hurtful, or frightening, the distinction may inform your decision about whether to initiate a threat assessment.
When a student makes a threat, it may look like:
The student makes a statement (verbally or in writing) such as "I will kill you!" or "Nobody is bulletproof..."
The student has said or behaved in a way that was probably a reaction to an antecedent, event, or decision that they did not like. (Example: "Stop telling me to do my work! I will blow your head off!")
The student throws or breaks an object during a behavioral escalation. The student may throw an object at (or away from) a staff member or student while escalated.
When a student poses a threat:
The student appears fixated on one or more targeted individuals with malicious ideas.
The student has brought - or attempted to bring - a weapon to school with the intent to severely harm another person.
The NWESD team has developed a 4 step process in determining the necessity of conducting a Level 1 threat assessment.
