The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a heavily researched and well-respected aptitude test developed by the Department of Defense. It measures a young adult's strengths and potential for success in military training. The ASVAB test for high school students can be taken when they are in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade, but also available to anyone who is eligible for enlistment into the armed forces. You are also eligible to retake the test to get a higher score if need be.

The results of your Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Arithmetic Reasoning subtests determine your Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) score. The AFQT score is often called the ASVAB score, and it determines which branch(es) of the military you are eligible to join.
Earning a AFQT Score of a 50+ can meet the Career Ready endorsement portion of the College and Career Ready Diploma when other requirements are met. Please see Graduation Requirements.
If you plan to join the military after high school, junior year is significant because it’s the first year you can use your ASVAB scores for enlistment. However, you must be 16 or older at the time you take the test. And once you turn 17, you’re able to enlist, but you must have parental consent. Your ASVAB scores can be used for enlistment up to two years after you take the test.
For more information about the steps required to enlist in the Military, check out this article at Careers in the Military.
Though you can take the ASVAB as early as 10th grade, most high school students take the test in their junior or senior year. After taking the ASVAB, be sure to check out the ASVAB Career Exploration Program (CEP) and all of the tools it contains.
Using your ASVAB scores, the ASVAB CEP helps you identify potentially satisfying careers. Your scores work in tandem with your results from the Find Your Interests (FYI) assessment in ASVAB CEP to jumpstart your career exploration in the OCCU-Find. The OCCU-Find contains detailed information on over 1,000 occupations to discover jobs that match your strengths and interests and then investigate the various paths you can take to enter those career fields.
