"Johns Hopkins surgeons have found an abundance of ways to relieve symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux when medication isn’t enough to manage them. They are minimally invasive and are considered to be a modernized treatment for the condition. Gastrointestinal and foregut surgeon Brett Parker states, “Some of them are classic techniques that we’ve modernized and are now performing via minimal access surgery, whether that includes a robot or just laparoscopic surgery. Some techniques are new, and we see amazing results.” Oftentimes patients suffering from refractory symptoms have a hiatal hernia where the stomach protrudes into the chest. The main ways to treat this is to repair the hiatal hernia either laparoscopically or robotically before re-creating the antireflux barrier."

"Due to the current state of the global pandemic, multiple surges of changes in the medical field are being actively noticed. The most recent being the decreasing number of blood donations in the nation. The American Red Cross has been experiencing its worst blood shortage in over a decade with the number of new donors lowering by thirty four percent. The current demand coming from individuals such as cancer patients, trauma, cardiac surgeries, and those with blood disorders would need one thousand additional donors daily to fulfill their needs. Rising with concern, doctors have taken it upon themselves to advocate for these services. Dr. Lasky has claimed, “Being the link from vein to vein, from the donor to the recipient, and to see that connection of life is very powerful.” With the high demands for the need of blood, this situation can imply a troubling timeline if standards are not rapidly met."

"Women who are older than the age of 21 or are sexually active should see an OB/GYN at least once a year. An OB/GYN stands for obstetric and gynecology. They have a medical specialty in women’s reproductive health. Caring for women during their pregnancy and just after the baby is born is their daily job. But they also deal with important medical issues for women. They help women with birth control, childbirth, menopause, and annual screening for women. OB/GYNs give a wide scope of preventive care services, such as ultrasounds, bloodwork, pelvic exams, STI testing, and pap smears. OB/GYNs are very important because they will take care of women in their most vulnerable times."

"Health care coverage covers clinical costs for illnesses, health conditions, and injuries. Everyone should have health insurance because yearly checkups are required, but most people can’t afford it. Health insurance has usually been given to individuals through their employer, but it is a specific plan. To select a different health plan, individuals would have to select them and pay for it themselves. Health insurance is given to protect individuals from unexpected, high medical costs. But recently it doesn’t feel that way. People get health insurance to have a low cost in the bill concerning health, but health insurance bills have increased, causing individuals to stop getting health insurance."

"Covid-19 has negatively affected many people’s mental health. About 4 in 10 adults in the U.S. have reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder during the pandemic. Many adults are also reporting difficulty sleeping or eating, increases in alcohol consumption or substance use, and worsening chronic conditions. All of this is due to worry and stress over the pandemic. The pandemic has also been linked to poor mental health outcomes such as isolation and job loss. Research shows that job loss is associated with depression, anxiety, distress, and low self esteem. Adults who have lost their jobs have reported higher rates of mental illness symptoms."

Kansas Doctor Loses License
Introduction
Since October of 1993, Kansas doctor Chad Sharp has both a license to practice both medicine and surgery. Based on research, in April of 2000, the Kansas Board of Healing Arts limited his license until October of 2005. The board limited his license again in October of 2006 until Sharp resigned his license in February of 2009. Sharp’s license was reinstated by the board in July 2017. However, the board also forced strict conditions with his license. Sharp had to thoroughly go through a patient’s medical history, having a patient’s treatment plan approved by a supervisor, and having to check with a supervisor before changing a patient’s treatment plan.
Why He Lost His License
From July 2020 to November 2020, Sharp started working for a different company. This company required him to call clients and ask them if they had and were suffering due to chronic illnesses. Sharp was paid on account of how many clients he assessed. He took note of their answers and prescribed the person with either a cream or ointment that was charged to that person’s insurance. However, he never conducted a physical exam on the patients he prescribed medicine to.
Many patients even stated that they never asked for nor consented to the medicine and treatment. All of this work was unsupervised, so Sharp never had to report any of his work to a supervisor.
During this time Sharp was supposed to follow the limitations the KSBHA put on his license. The prescriptions Sharp billed to the patients’ insurance are ranging from at least July 2020 to February 2021. Since he violated the conditions on his license, Dr. Chad Sharp was forced to concede both his license to practice surgery and his license to practice medicine by the Kansas Board of Healing Arts.

"Newborn babies can come out of the womb with health problems. Most of these health conditions are treatable. A very common health problem would be Jaundice; this is the condition in which the skin or eyes of a newborn turn a yellowish color. The reasoning behind this is, the newborn’s liver is immature and doesn’t work to remove bilirubin from the blood. Bilirubin is a brown and yellow pigment formed in the liver after erythrocytes are broken down. When bilirubin levels build up this causes the pigment of the skin to go yellow and may be a sign of liver damage/disease."

"Mental health has many different aspects. These are disorders to do with emotions; anxiety, personality, and psychotic are some among many. Anxiety can be simple at times and the other times it can be horrifying. Anxiety is the disorder in which a person starts to feel nervous. Their breath and heart-rate start to increase rapidly and it can make them struggle to finish sentences. With this you start looking at the bad side in every situation and can’t pull yourself out of it. More severe cases can lead to panic attacks, hyperventilation, or nausea. There is medication to treat anxiety but exercising can also help."

"E. Coli or Escherichia coli are bacteria that usually live in the intestines of people and animals. Although all types of E. Coli are generally met with hostility, most E. Coli are harmless and are rather an important part of the human intestinal tract. On the other hand, the ones that are dangerous or pathogenic can cause illnesses such as diarrhea, pneumonia, and other illnesses around the intestinal tract. These dangerous types of E. Coli can be transmitted through contaminated food, water, and contact with contaminated animals or people. This means that anyone can contract E. Coli, but the people with increased chances are adults who are 65 and older, children younger than 5 years of age, people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and people who travel to certain countries."

"HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the cells that help the body fight infection. It is one of the more common viruses in the world. This virus that attacks the immune system makes a person more vulnerable to other infections and diseases. It can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) if not treated. AIDS is the most severe stage of HIV which can lead to a number of severe illnesses. These severe illnesses caused by AIDS are called opportunistic infections. Although these infections are less common in people with HIV today because of effective HIV treatment, some people still develop opportunistic infections because they may not know they have HIV. "

"On November 24, 2021, a new variant of SARS-CoV-2, was reported to the World Health Organization. Viruses constantly change through mutation and these mutations can result in new variants just like the Covid-19 virus. This new variant is called the Omicron Variant. This variation was first detected in specimens collected in Botswana and in South Africa in November of 2021. The United States classified this new variant as a ¨Variant of Concern¨, a category used for variants of a virus that are linked to rapid spread in human populations. The first confirmed U.S case of Omicron was identified on December 1, 2021. CDC has been working with global public health and industry partners to learn more about Omicron, as they don't know much about it yet. "

"When Covid first started spreading rapidly across the United States, people said it was a hoax, or that it wasn’t as bad as people made it seem. People didn’t take the precautions seriously. They didn’t social distance, wash their hands, or wear a mask in public. Due to this happening, it spread fast, and it continues to spread and people have died from it. Which is why it was so important to get a vaccine to prevent the spread out fast. The Covid-19 vaccine has been a controversial political and medical topic."

"A midwife named Ina May Gaskin once said, “We are the only species of mammal that doubts our ability to give birth. It’s profitable to scare women about birth. But let's stop it.” As the human race progressed, the standards of living changed drastically. For example, the way we gather food and build living spaces have changed for the better and is continuously improving. Furthermore, the stigma around both childbirth and pregnancy has also changed and the standards are becoming glaringly different. Advancements in society have pushed women to experience childbirth differently."
