Social workers in the school settings full time is still very new. I was one of the few about five years ago that had to take on the new role and now we are at a large number of schools today. Before social workers were on campus, there were only a few wraparound social workers that were assigned to help with referrals for all the schools in CCSD. Now we have expanded and can have at least one social worker on campus and can provide assistance to more students and families.
As a licensed clinical therapist, I am able to provide therapy services if there are barriers for receiving outside services.
We work with all things pertaining to mental health. We can create treatment plans to better help your child be as successful as possible at school AND home.
We are able to work with the families as a whole if needed. Pre-COVID, we conducted home visits and met with families that found it easier than meeting at the school. For this 2020-2021 school year, we are limited to tele health services, email and phone calls to parent/guardians. Students can be supported via tele health and email.
We can provide many, many resources. If we do not have a direct resource to help with what you may need, we will connect with other social workers in the region to do our best to help.
We work in all crisis management cases at the school. The higher the need of the student and family, the more likely the social worker is referred.
We work in collaboration with all staff to help the student and family.
We are a part of the Multidisciplinary Leadership Team (MLT) that consists of the school counselors, school psychologist, school nurse and Special Education Instructional Facilitator (SEIF).
In short, if a family is in need of any assistance at all, we do our best to provide for them or connect them to who can.
