Art 1

Art I is designed for students who want to develop their critical and creative thinking skills as well as broaden their understanding and appreciation of the visual arts. This course will increase students’ proficiency in art techniques and processes through two and three-dimensional work. This course requires students to scaffold learned skills from the middle school art sequence or Art Fundamentals. Multiple uses and combinations of diverse art mediums will be explored to aid in the development of personal and visual power. Interdisciplinary connections and careers are also explored.

Still Life

One of the principal genres of Western art – essentially, the subject matter of a still life painting or sculpture is anything that does not move.

Impossible Shapes

Students used previous knowledge about value scales and shading to create optical illusion paintings of impossible squares or Penrose Squares. Students used a pair of complementary colors plus white to learn about the basics of color mixing and blending with acrylic paint. They created this optical illusion by painting contrasting transitions of value within this impossible shape. This project focuses on color theory, color mixing using only primaries and white, tinting, shading, and acrylic painting techniques.

Abstract Value Drawings

Students had a choice of 3 outcomes and created abstract drawings to study and practice pencil shading techniques. The goal was to explore abstract compositions, as well as building on smooth shading without smudging.

Upside Down Picasso Drawings

Drawing upside-down helps students practice recognizing shapes and lines in a subject. By turning their reference photo upside-down, they can begin to draw with the right side of their brains. They don’t have to worry as much about the final product, and can focus more on the actual drawing process. Students practiced drawing upside-down, then explored line quality and added color after reviewing color theory.
