As a compulsory part of the Year Five Classroom Music Program at Nudgee College, all students in this year group will learn an Orchestral instrument from scratch, taking part in a beginner classroom band or orchestra. Through actively learning a musical instrument with an instrumental tutor and playing it together as an ensemble, the boys will learn about Music in a very practical way. This includes music theory, concepts and notation. Please note that this immersion program is part of the Nudgee Curriculum, so there are also no additional costs for participation this year.
Your son will be emailed a link to an Instrument Timbre Preference Test. Timbre is the quality and tone of sound an instrument produces. This test ascertains which instrument sound is most favoured by your son, through a series of listening examples and questions. One of seven timbre groups will be assigned to your son based on his responses to the question. For more information on the Timbre Preference Test visit https://giamusicassessment.com/
The seven timbre groups are:
Flute and Violin
Clarinet and Viola
Saxophone and Viola
Oboe, Cor Anglais, and Bassoon
Trumpet
Trombone and Cello
Euphonium and String Bass
Once the timbre group has been indicated by the test, an instrument will then be assigned to your son based on this information and the information provided on the Loan Hire agreement.
Although all efforts are made to assign an appropriate instrument, if there are any issues with instrument allocation, please email music@nudgee.qld.edu.au with any concerns. Be aware that we are limited by class sizes and quantities of certain instruments
Please remember the boys will be assessed on their instrument throughout the course of the year, so they need to take their home practice and instrumental lessons seriously. To achieve the best outcome from our music program, the boys will be encouraged to do around 10 – 15 minutes of practice most days on their instrument, as set homework for Music (around 30-40 mins total). The key to success for young musicians is many short practices, done regularly. In order for there to be real progress, students need to ensure that their practice sessions are frequent and focused- less time but more often is far better than long practice sessions. In order to master anything we need 10,000 hours! But this requires both quantity and quality of practice.
Failure is an important part of the learning process, and I’m sure that especially over the coming weeks and months there may be some very frustrated young men. Please encourage them that everybody has started where they are- and it’s only a matter of time. There‘s nothing you can’t do, you just can’t do it yet. When we make errors or struggle, it is with a growth mindset we push forward and see these as challenges to overcome, not pits to fall into.
As part of our Year 5 Music Program, boys will be given the opportunity to level up on their instrument. Over the course of the years, boys will be able to gain levels on their instrument, up to Level 7, or beyond to Level NC. We encourage all students to try their best to achieve the highest level possible throughout the year.
Each time a student levels up, they will receive a badge to proudly display on their uniform. At the end of the year, students will be able to keep their highest level badge, to celebrate their achievement and hard work on their instrument.
