Progress Update 1

Start of CustoMasksg

Current Progress
Our team and I solidified our business idea and have began working on our business plan document as well as the business blog. There had been a change in our original idea due to the high capital cost required. However our team came settled on this new idea which also revolves around sustainability. Our team has drafted our survey regarding our product which will be sent out to the public soon to gather data. Additionally, our team has decided on our company logo (as attached), and will be drafting out more mask designs to be attached in the survey to get a better sensing of what designs our target customers prefer.
Moving Forward
Our team's aim for the coming week is to finish up our business document, work on the business blog site, and consolidate our survey results. Finally, we have to prepare for the presentation on the 17th October, Saturday.

Progress Update 2

Business presentation pitch and moving forward

Completion of business presentation pitch
On 17th October 2020, our team presented our business plans along with our feasbility and market analysis. While I could not physically be at the presentation due to a clash with my Tax Mid-Terms Examinations, my team updated me on how they fared and I had a positive feeling things went well. Leading up to the presentation, we had to complete our company's website and business plan report document. As the schedule was tight, our meetings via zoom always extended throughout the night until the early hours of the morning. However, I am thankful for my understanding and responsible team members who were clear in our directions and completed the work that were delegated. As my group members were with me since ET9131, we have come a long way and forged stronger bonds.

Next Steps
Our team has fixed a dedicated time slot to meet every week to update on our progress. Moving forward, we need to contact the various clubs and get them to buy into our CustoMasks. Our team has compiled all the clubs into an excel sheet and split them equally among the 4 of us to contact them. Additionally, we are sourcing for local suppliers which will be our contingency plan should there be any disruptions faced by our overseas suppliers.

Progress Update 3

Halloween Initiative

Had another zoom meeting over the week of Halloween where we discussed on marketing implementations for this event, as well as future work flows, local supply sourcing and social media presence.
Credits to Aileen as she created the Halloween Instagram Filter and got it approved by Facebook within a tight schedule, just in time for our Halloween drop.

Our Instagram Page

Officially unveiled our Instagram Page to create a social media presence for CustoMask. For our content, we decided on keeping it aesthically simple with colours of blue and white (which are our theme colours).

Halloween Marketing Initiative

We created our very own CustoMask's Halloween Instagram Story Filter and launched our first ever marketing strategy over Halloween.
We leveraged on the power of social media, a free marketing tool, to get prospective consumers from NTU to use our instagram filter and post a picture with their favourite mask filter in a creative way and stand a chance to win a custom-made halloween mask.

Instagram Analytics

Our Halloween marketing strategy turned out better than expected. We had 488 users opening our instagram filter with 178 captures with it. Not bad for a first marketing strategy !
We hope to leverage on this and continue with the sourcing for customers and gaining more followings over the course of the next few weeks.

Progress Update 4

Results of Halloween Initiative

Another Zoom meeting to consolidate the Halloween Event results and choosing of the winner of our Halloween Giveaway event.

The winner wanted a mask with her initials embroided into the mask and we have submitted our order, awaiting its arrival for the giveaway.

Progress Update 5

Sourcing for Local Suppliers and customers

Shi Zhou and I were tasked to search for local suppliers as contingency plans should our Indian supplier be unable to produce the masks due to circumstances like low order quantity, custom and shipment issues, etc. All of us also sought to reach potential customers in hopes of securing some deals.

Local Supplier 1

Over the past month, we have been contacting various local suppliers as a contingency plan should our overseas supplier from India face issues with delivery, or when the order is small and more suited for local supply.

What we found is that local suppliers doing customized masks are much more expensive compared to overseas suppliers. However, we have found a few local suppliers and would only use these suppliers as a contingency plan for our overseas supplier.

Local Supplier 2

One of the many local suppliers we have contacted.
The price quoted by this particular supplier is at a premium price, not suited for mass ordering and selling.

Sourcing for Customers

An enquiry for quotations by NTU Economics Society

Sourcing for customers

Over the past few weeks and months, the CustoMask team has been actively sending out emails and verbally discussing with NTU Clubs and Societies regarding our products. Given that it is now the Finals Period, many have yet to reply while some would only consider after the Finals Period. We are hopefuly for more positive responses and orders in the near future, especially for next semester should Inter-Hall Games proceed along with sourcing for items for Welfare Packs.

CustoMask team will pursue and follow up to push for more orders once Finals are over. Till then, stay healthy ! :)

Progress Update 6
Closing deals and following up with potential deals

Design 1

Design 2

Design 3

As Shi Zhou proceeds with closing deals with School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (SPMS) Club, Devasri closing deals with NTU Model United Nations etc, I was tasked to co-ordinate with NTU Accountancy and Business Club (ABC) in the mask sales. With Aileen being the designer of our team, she helped designed the above masks to give an idea of how NTU ABC masks can look like. I co-ordinated with the contact person of NTU ABC and we are in the midst of drafting an email to UPO to give the green light before proceeding with collaborating with NTU ABC. Closing this deal would be a huge milestone in our journey as NBS has a huge following in NTU and masks would be supplied for years to come. We are hopeful UPO will give the greenlight to proceed with this collaboration.

With deals being closed, CustoMask hopes to collate our sales and have our first order in by 31st Dec 2020.

Progress Update 7

Business operations

Receiving payments from customers, launching our market research, meeting with NTUSU and keeping track of finances as the chief financial officer

Receiving payment from NTUMUN

Customask succesfully closed our first deal with NTUMUN. A total of 75 masks were ordered with a total revenue of $375. As a deposit, $150 was received with $225 payable upon completion of our service. We hope for more deals to come !!

Launching the market research

As we plan to expand into the B2C scene, we first had to have a sensing of what designs potential customers would like to see on their masks. We created about 8 designs with a black and white theme and launched them on our instagram page via a polling.

Zoom Meeting with NTUSU

Customask had a meeting with NTUSU to discuss potential partnerships for their future projects as well as adopting NTUPerks. We are in talks for a potential publication by NTUSU and hope to conclude a deal with them soon.

Drafting of Invoices

As the CFO of Customask, I am tasked to track finances as well as creating invoices to customers. These invoices will be sent to customers for billing in all our sale transactions.

Pleasant surprise

In October, Customask had a Halloween Giveaway with one lucky customer getting a rose pink customized mask with her initials. As part of the giveaway, she posted a story wearing the mask which was reposted by us and added into our instagram story highlights. This week, a user stumbled upon our Instagram page and saw the rose pink mask on our instagram page and put in an order for it as well as two additional orders as seen in the picture. A really pleasant surprise indeed !!

Progress Update 8

Valentines Day Promotion

New campaign in view of the upcoming Valentines Day in Feb to increase sales. Our team hope to leverage on festive events to generate sales

Aileen has been hard at work creating designs and posters for our Instagram Page. Our Valentines Day promotion aims to open orders until 20th Jan (with possibility of extension should demand be high) with a 3-4 weeks lead time before the masks arrives. This is a step towards expansion into B2C market rather than the usual B2B business model we originally had.

Progress Update 9

CustoMasksg new-look website

Website's frontpage

With eye-catching play on fonts and colour, we hope to attract customers to be intrigued by the customized masks offered.

Check-out procedures

After experimenting on the purchasing procedures, we finally agreed to a simple check-out procedure with a confirmation email sent to customers upon payment for their order.

Website is fully functional and finally up and running as of 14 January 2021.
Fingers crossed for orders coming in!

Progress Update 10

Reaching out to more customers (B2B)
As a team, we have decided to focus on B2B transactions rather than B2C. We have started expanding to NTU Halls.

After much trial and error with Business to Consumer sales, we realise that Business to Business sales were the way to go as orders are in bulk which is better received by our supplier in India. It was tough to propose to the supplier to manufacture just a few pieces of masks. After the closing of deal with ASE Club with their order of 26 pieces of masks, we expanded into NTU Halls. We started contacting contact persons from NTU Halls and shared with them CustoMasksg quotation and MOQ requirements. We are hopeful to collaborate with some NTU Halls and be their official mask supplier.

Progress Update 11

Branching out to charity/non-profit organisations

After the insight from Prof Roderick and Prof Adrian, we decided to explore working with charites and non-profit organisations. While we are still sourcing for suitable organisations to work with, NBS Accountancy and Business Club has approached us again regarding purchasing of masks for their events. The professor-in-charge was impressed with the idea of social enterprise and we are still in discussion for a preliminary first order of 50 masks followed by a subsequent bulk order if criteria like quality and designs are met. A bulk of our proceeds will go to charity/non-profit organisations from this transaction and our CustoMasksg team are still in discussion of the relevant organisations to work with.

Progress Update 12

Working with clubs and external organisations with a social cause!
Finally seeing some good progress in our business.

Over the past few weeks, we have been contacting clubs in NTU to collaborate with them with a social cause in mind. We are glad to announce that we have succesfully closed deals with NTU Cat Management Network (CMN) and NTU Earthlink regarding the sales of our masks to them. Profits from NTU CMN will 100% be going to them to fund their operations in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of cats, such as medical and food expenses for cats, while some profits from Earthlink will go to ACRES. We have learnt and progressed a lot after previous failed dealings with NTU Student Union. We learnt that we should always follow up and put our discussion and agreements in writing, and also be upfront with our prices. For our deals with CMN and Earthlink, we have put our agreements in writing and drafted up a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to solidify our deals.

We are now in the process of collating the orders to be sent to our supplier.

Additionally, we are still awaiting the news from NBS, with a potential order of between 800-1000 masks. I have personally contacted Jordan (contact person for NTU Accountancy and Business Club for NBS) in hopes of expediting the process. However, the NBS professor in charge of approval of the deal is still yet to make a decision.
We are eargerly hoping for good news in the next few days.

With the business showcase coming up next week, our team has delegated our work in preparation for the slide deck presentation and this, along with confirming our orders, will be the priority over the next few days.

Progress update 13

Wrapping up final bits of sales and financial summary

NBS Mask Sample

With the impending completion of the 50 NBS masks for sample and quality test, NBS will be placing an order of 1000 NBS masks by the end of March. From now till then, we will be following up with NTU ABC and look to complete the deal and transaction process.

Financial Summary

This is our financial summary till date from our business operation from Decemeber 2020 to March 2021 excluding the 1000 unit sale to NBS. Revenue has been steadily rising while our donations has also been rising upon the implementation of social causes in February 2021 which really boosted our business

Business Showcase

The final event to showcase how far CustoMask has grown!

Along with the 4 other groups in the Minor in Entrepreneurship course, we presented our business and shared our journey that was started in May 2019. This event was a culmination and practical application from our course together in ET9131, ET9132, ET9133, ET9134 and finally ET9135.

In the showcase, I was heartened to see how far our batch as grown, from brainstorming on business ideas, to business plan development and finally implementation. Throughout the journey, every group faced difficulties in their own aspects but overcame them and learnt through these setbacks and successes. All these will equip us well when we enter the workforce and allow us to gain the experience when we want to start on an entrepreneaurship again in the future.

For our sharing, we presented on our journey detailing how many of our agreements with customers fell through due to miscommunication on our part which was borned out of inexperience. This was one of the major learning curve I faced and thankful that I faced this problem early in my entrepreneaurship journey. We overcame this by writing a detailed summary of agreements and information made with our customers and sent them either through emails or whatsapp. We constantly made the effort to follow up to close the deals as soon as possible. Taking ownership and responsibility is really key in ensuring deals go through. Additionally, another major learning point is improving our marketing campaign. While we managed to hit a following of about 100 on our Instagram page, more could be done to improve our reach. The Halloween Giveaway was a success but we could leverage more by working with influencers and getting social organisations to post us on their page to increase our reach. These are key pointers which I will look to implement on my next entrepreneaurship journey. Finally, we also learnt that having social causes and missions really boosted our sales. More customers and organisations were more willing to work with us after hearing our proposal for social causes and supported our sales. As such, it is integral to incorporate social missions into our businesses in the future, not only to help in sales, but also really to do good for the world.
