Composition
The worksheet below outlines the steps to compose your own piece of Electronic Dance Music. Further down this page this is broken down further with tutorial videos to help you.
Open a new file in Garageband
Set the tempo to around 133 BPM
Create a new track and select an Electronic Drum Kit sound (like a 909)
Create a new MIDI region and draw in a drum beat
Four-on-the-Floor kick drum
Snare or similar on beat 2 and 4
Hi-hat on the off-beat
Add other drum sounds to add interest
Loop your beat for at least four bars (upto bar 5)
Try the Quantise function to make your beat more interesting
Try varying the Velocity of some notes to balance the sounds
Choose a Chord Progression from the worksheet to use
Create a new track and select a synthesiser patch for the sound
Create a one-bar MIDI region and programme in the first chord from your progression
Then programme in the other chords into separate MIDI regions
Experiment with the Argegiator and sound until it fits.
You should now have a 4 bar drum loop and a chord progression that finishes at bar 5 (number 5 in the ruler at the top)
Create a new track and select an appropriate synthesiser bass patch
Use the Root note from the worksheet (as shown above)
Use the rhythm shown on the right and explained in the video
Experiment with moving some notes to create more interest
3 blocks 3 blocks 3 blocks 3 blocks 4 blocks
Create a new track and this time choose a synthesiser sound that will stand out of your backing.
Improvise using the keyboard over your chord progression, starting and ending on the root of Chord 1 from your progression until you have something that fits.
Record your riff onto this new track.
Well, you are in luck because I have just the riff for you. This riff comes from I'm Good (Blue) - David Guetta and Bebe Rexha which was released in 2023-24. This riff was also used in the Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Ba Dee) released in 1999.
This piece is originally in G Minor, but the transcription below has changed the key to C Major
You should now have a:
drum loop
chord progression
bass line
main memorable riff
They should all fit in time!
How is your track going to start?
How are you going to keep you audience engaged?
How is your track going to finish?
Finally, you can experiment with using volume changes, panning and adding/adjusting other effects to develop the texture and shape of your performance.
The video on the right will guide you through different ways to do this...
You should now have a piece of EDM music that includes:
Drum loop
Chord progression
Bass line
Memorable main riff
For extra credit, it should include some editing of effects, pan and/or volume changes.
Export your work from Garageband as an mp3 and upload onto Google Classroom.
