Literacy:

    • Aim for at least 20 minutes of reading daily.

            • Set aside a family reading time. Turn off the screens, get cozy, and share the love of reading together (or independently in the same room). Not only does this show your children that you value reading, but it's a great way to bond as a family.

            • Break it up into smaller increments. We're all busy, but it's easy to sneak in five minutes here and there between activities or during waiting time. Keep a couple books in the bathroom.

            • Listen to audiobooks. This is a great option, especially for those who have reluctant readers at home. This is one of my favorite ways to devour books. I love to listen in the car, while I cook and clean, and while I color or work on puzzles.

    • Talk about reading. Take turns asking and answering questions. Make predictions and connections. Discuss the characters and their actions. Identify the beginning, middle, and end or the problem and solution. Practice retelling the story.

    • Visit the library together. The Highland Park Library is a wonderful resource. Participate in their programs.

    • Use your Clever code to login to RAZ Kids, our digital library. Here, students have access to leveled books with quick comprehension checks to track their progress.

Math:

    • Practice the standards. Dreambox takes students through all of the 2nd grade Common Core State standards and beyond! Login to Dreambox using your Clever account.

    • Practice math facts. By the end of second grade, students are expected to be fluent in their addition and subtraction facts up to 20. We will also learn and practice numerous strategies for addition and subtraction through 100.

    • Play math games. Our math curriculum includes work stations for each unit, full of fun, interactive games. Ask your child to teach their favorite one. Most can be played with a regular deck of cards and/or six-sided dice.
