Here are our curricular updates and important reminders for next week:
ELA: We will finish our first module and take a benchmark reading assessment. As always, please use our 1A Focus Poster to follow along with our learning goals for this module. We will also continue to review long vowel sounds (magic e) and finish our narrative writing.
Math: Please continue to use this Unit 1 Overview, which highlights our learning goals as well as some of the strategies we will cover. Next week, we will review doubles and halves.
Inquiry: Students will continue to explore how communities are different.
Reminders:
Art Smocks: After Labor Day weekend, students will be painting during Art, which can get very messy. Please send an art smock or old, oversized t-shirt in a gallon ziploc bag that is clearly labeled with your child's name.
Headphones: Please ensure your child has a pair of headphones they can keep here at school.
Stylus: All students were provided a Logitech crayon (stylus) to use with their iPads. Those should be charged and sent to school daily with the iPads, as we will use them often. If your child lost their stylus, you can submit a technology ticket for a replacement here.
Here are our curricular updates and important reminders for next week:
ELA: We will finish up Trouble at the Sandbox and move into our next story, Snowshoe Hare's Winter Home. Please continue to use this 1A Focus Poster for our learning goals for this module. Next week, we will also review long vowel sounds (magic e) and continue working on narrative writing.
Math: Please continue to use this Unit 1 Overview, which highlights our learning goals as well as some of the strategies we will cover. Next week, we will use number racks, ten frames, and even double-decker busses to model our thinking for addition and subtraction strategies through 20.
Inquiry: Students will explore how communities are different.
Important Reminders:
School Supplies: Students need the following items every day for school: charged iPad and stylus, masks, lunch (snack optional), and a water bottle. We had several dead or missing iPads this week. If you would like to send in an art smock (or an old, oversized shirt), students can keep them in their cubbies. If you have not yet sent in headphones, please do that as well.
MAP Testing is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday next week. Second grade will test first thing in the morning. Please make sure iPads are fully charged!
CRISIS-GO: The deadline for Crisis-Go certification is 8:00 AM. If your child is not certified at that time, they cannot enter the classroom and must go to the nurse. This leads to missed instruction and creates a hectic start to our day. Please set a reminder or sign up for the text messages to help you remember this important requirement.
Request for Support:
Please take a few moments to reiterate expectations for behavior at school, including listening while others are speaking, keeping hands to self, and politely following directions. We know this is a tough transition for everyone, so please relay a consistent message at home for behavioral expectations. We appreciate your support.
Congratulations! We've made it to the end of the first week! Our sweet second graders spent these three days building community and learning about our classmates and routines, and we're excited to dig into our curriculum on Monday.
ELA: We are beginning our first unit, which focuses on understanding communities, with the story Trouble at the Sandbox. Please see this focus poster for our learning goals for this module. Next week, we will review short vowel sounds and begin working on narrative writing.
Math: Our first unit is called Figure the Facts. Please see this unit overview, which highlights our learning goals as well as some of the strategies we will cover. We will begin by creating beetle glyphs, which we will sort and graph to show our understanding. We will also take our first pre-assessment, helping us learn more about how we can support each student.
Inquiry: Students will explore the places we live, work, and play that make up a community.
We are so excited to partner with you for the 2021-2022 school year. This blog will be updated on Fridays to communicate announcements and curricular information from the second grade team.
Please ensure that you are connected with us on the Seesaw family app! This is an easy way for you to see pictures and get announcements about things happening in our classrooms, both from us and your child. Students love getting feedback from their parents when they share assignments throughout the day. It is also our preferred method of communication, as it organizes all of our correspondence in one thread. If you need help connecting, please reach out to your child's teacher.
Important Reminders:
Masks: Please keep an extra mask in your student's backpack at all times.
CrisisGO: Please remember to certify your student every day by 8:00 AM.
Water Bottles: Please send a labeled, refillable water bottle. Sports tops are preferred, if possible, to minimize spills.
Snack: Second graders have recess before lunch. Please send a fruit or vegetable snack to help them get through that morning stretch.
Technology: iPads and the Logitech stylus will continue to travel back and forth every day with your student. We recommend creating a system to help ensure they are charged and returned to school daily.
School Supplies: Please remember there is no supply drop-off at Meet the Teacher this year. If you ordered supplies through the PTO, they have been delivered. For everyone else, supplies can be staggered through the first week. Students will want their pencil boxes, art supplies, and folders for the first day.
Upcoming Events:
Meet the Teacher: Tuesday, August 17 from 1:45-2:30.
First Day: Wednesday, August 18. Students will be dismissed at 1:40 PM.
Back to School Bash: August 26 from 6:00-7:00 PM
