9th grade

The first assignment for English class for the upcoming school year is to read Flowers for Algernon (by Daniel Keyes) AND The Book Thief (by Markus Zusak). These books have been chosen very carefully, and we hope that you enjoy them.

Please schedule time to read them all during the summer months. Sensible scheduling will result in students having adequate time to complete their books. When you return to school in early September, your teachers will ask you to complete a written assignment based on the books.

Although we are not requiring a written assignment to be done during the summer, we are giving a thinking assignment. For each book:

·         Focus on specific scenes in the book that show characters being either kind or cruel to others.

 ·        Think about what the book is saying about the issue of kindness vs. cruelty.

·         Think about how the book is narrated. (Who is telling the story?)
