CHARACTERISTICS OF 3RD GRADERS
Enthusiastic, open to new experiences and using new materials
Anxious to please their peers, careful not to do anything too different from what others re doing
Separate themselves by gender outside the classroom, but work well in mixed group projects
Interested in drawing realistically, frustrated when they aren't able to, like to use fantasy in artwork
Enjoy Art museums and learning about the role of Artists in society
Students will describe their personal response to specific works of art using visual art terminology
TEACHING 3RD GRADERS
Teach them how to draw what they see not what they know
Discuss proportion and the human form
State objective when beginning, have them evaluate halfway through to see if they are meeting the objective in their work
Introduce sculpture in the round. Introduce concept of height, width, and depth that can be viewed from all angles.
Discuss how people respond differently to different artworks
Talk about how things work (buildings, machinery, transportation, etc.) -The "why of form and function
