An important function of the school nurse is to conduct regular health screenings and provide health education for our students.
The two screenings completed regularly are hearing and vision screenings. Deficits in hearing and/or vision can contribute to educational, emotional and behavioral issues. Regular screening helps to discover these deficits early and allows for prompt treatment. Each District 2 school nurse currently holds a certificate as a hearing and vision technician with the state of Illinois. More information regarding the state hearing and vision program can be found here.
Hearing Screening
Hearing screening is performed annually for students in Pre-K through 3rd grade, students new to the district, and students who receive special education services. These screenings are typically performed by the school nurse. This screening is state mandated and is not optional.
Vision Screening
Vision screening is performed for students in Kindergarten, 2nd, and 8th grade. It is also mandated for all new students to the district and students receiving special education services. It is not optional. Vision screening is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision evaluation by an eye doctor. Your child is not required to have this vision screening if you have provided an eye exam form completed and signed by a licensed eye doctor, which is based on an exam from the previous 12 months.
Your school nurse helps to promote students' self-advocacy and self-care through individual health education based on that student's unique needs.
Classroom health education is also coordinated by the school nurse and includes topics such as hand washing, dental hygiene and growth and development.
