It's easy to feel anxiety and stress, especially with everything going on in the world today. This video demonstrates the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 Grounding Technique to help you work through your stress and anxiety. This proven method will help calm your mind and bring your focus back to the present.
When you notice your body and mind getting tense with bigger emotions, try to attach “feeling” words to your experience by using I-Messages. I-messages are simply saying something like this, “I feel _______________________ when _______________________________.” When you pause to take a moment to label what you are feeling, you are moving your brain activity from your “emotion brain” (known as the limbic system) to your “thinking brain” (known as your prefrontal cortex). This helps to create more distance between you and your feeling. Your “thinking brain” is the part of your brain that helps regulate and manage emotions. It helps calm your “emotion brain.” So, with feelings, you have to “Name It to Tame It.”
