I follow the Collection Development section of the NPHS Library Guidelines when purchasing and removing books for the library collection. To aid in purchasing, I consider professional reviews posted from websites such as School Library Journal, Booklist, and Publisher's Weekly.
If your student is struggling with independent reading, it can be frustrating for all involved. If it's a choice reading book, please encourage them to ask me for a recommendation in the library, or visit the public library to ask a staff member. We will work with your student to find a book they are more likely to enjoy.
I am also able to help your student access books in another format. Accessing an e-book on their phone or iPad instead of a physical book can help students who may forget their book at school, or provide increased font size and color options that are easier on the eyes, including font options for students with dyslexia. E-audiobooks are also available for students who prefer listening to a story.
Please reach out to me at amybarnard@npusc.k12.in.us if I can help your student with alternative access.
Book donations are welcome of YA literature, adult fiction appropriate for teens and AP classes, interesting nonfiction for a high school level, and graphic novels appropriate for high school. If I can't use them for the library collection, I will have them available as giveaways for students to take home and keep.
Gently used board games, puzzles, and crafts/activities are also popular with students.
The high school library collection serves a variety of needs. Some books recommended for Advanced Placement courses, many featured on AP tests, are considered adult literature. If you are concerned about content, please e-mail me at amybarnard@npusc.k12.in.us to request that you are notified by e-mail whenever your student checks out a book from the school library. You can then discuss any concerns with your student and we can work together to find an alternative title if needed.
If you feel strongly about a book in the library collection, please see page 5 of the NPHS Library Guidelines for our policy on Reconsiderations and Book Challenges.
