LEVEL EXPECTATIONS
Level 1: Novice: Level 1 assumes the student has no background in the target language.
Level 2: Novice to Intermediate: Level 2 begins the year with novice level tasks and progressively increases difficulty to intermediate level by the end of the year.
Level 3: Intermediate Low-Mid: Level 3 is a full intermediate course and is designed to challenge students to increase their proficiency in the target language. Level 3 requires a solid novice foundation from Levels 1 & 2. Students who choose to enroll in a Level 3 or higher course are committing to learning the language with significantly more rigor and dedication than previous courses. In Italian and Japanese, this is the Pre-AP course.
Level 4 - French & Spanish: Intermediate Mid: Level 4 offers higher intermediate coursework and incorporates more content from the target culture. Students who enroll in a Level 4 course are committing to learning the language with significantly more rigor and dedication than previous courses.
AP: Intermediate Mid-High: These courses revolve around the AP Themes prescribed by the CollegeBoard and include aspects of Level 4.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
GUIDELINES
All students choose a World Language in grade 7 and they will remain in the same language for their middle school career: French or Spanish.
All world language courses grades are full-year, daily core classes beginning in grade 7.
All students take a placement test in their respective language in February of grade 8 to determine the appropriate level for grade 9.
Students may also select a new language in grade 9. The Italian and Japanese programs begin in grade 9 with level 1.
French A- 7th Grade
French A provides the student with an introduction to the French language and the culture of the French-speaking world. Emphasis is on the development of listening and speaking skills as well as reading and writing. Elements of the course include vocabulary related to daily life, the sound and spelling system, and elementary linguistic structures that support conversation. The World Languages curriculum is aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for World Languages.
French B - 8th Grade
French B will continue to engage students in the basic elements of French language and culture they began in French A. Through interactive lessons using everyday vocabulary, students will continue to speak, read, write, and understand spoken French. The course will also cover cultural aspects of the language with regard to sports, weather, holidays and vacationing, pastimes, clothing, shopping, the home, and customs not only in France but also in the Francophone World. After completing a full two-year sequence in French, the goal is for students to enter French 2 in 9th grade after demonstrating a high level of proficiency on the 8th grade French Language placement test. The World Languages curriculum is aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for World Languages.
Spanish A - 7th Grade
Spanish A provides the student with an introduction to the Spanish language and the culture of the Spanish-speaking world. Spanish B - 8th Grade
Spanish B emphasizes the further development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through the introduction of additional vocabulary and more advanced linguistic structures. Basic communication skills are stressed as students continue to explore a wide variety of cultural topics and read short selections in Spanish. After completing a full two-year sequence in Spanish, the goal is for students to enter Spanish 2 in 9th grade after demonstrating a high level of proficiency on the 8th grade Spanish Language placement test. The World Languages curriculum is aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for World Languages.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Spanish occurs as part of the specials cycle. Students are given one session per week of instruction in the Spanish language and cultural traditions of the world. The students are introduced to vocabulary related to the environment and time, the countries of the Spanish-speaking world, and how to speak about themselves and others by describing physical and personality characteristics, occupations, and life activities. .
