Honors Biomedical Engineering is an advanced STEM elective in which students explore the intersection of science, medicine, technology, and engineering. This course equips students with the knowledge and skills to tackle healthcare challenges through the application of biological understanding and engineering skills.
This course is structured to foster active student engagement in scientific inquiry and engineering practices that explore rigorous physiological, medical, and technological concepts. The curriculum is designed to cultivate hands-on laboratory experiences, engineering challenges, and promote collaborative problem-solving skills. By exploring the relationship between engineering principles and biomedical applications, students will develop an appreciation for the transformative potential of innovative design solutions to enhance patient care and shape the future of medicine.
In addition to content-based knowledge and skills, this curriculum integrates the skills, knowledge, and expertise of the NJSLS Standard 9, Career Readiness, Life Literacies, and Key Skills, which, when used in combination with standards-based content, ensure that students are prepared for success in the future they inherit. By integrating laboratory experiments, creative projects, and engineering design challenges, this course encourages students to gain practical skills in data collection, analysis, and interpretation, while also honing their abilities to communicate effectively about scientific concepts and innovative solutions.
Upon completion of this course, students will have a robust understanding of the practices, crosscutting concepts, and core ideas underpinning both scientific inquiry and medical engineering. Students will have the ability to confidently engage in discussions of biomedical concepts, critically evaluate and interpret biomedical engineering information relevant to their daily lives, and further explore the role of biomedical engineers in driving medical advancements.
