4-6 Art
In our upper elementary art program, the focus shifts from solely exploration to more intentionality. Students transition into longer, multi-week projects that allow for deep immersion in the creative process, from initial conceptualization to final polish. There is more of an emphasis on craftsmanship and technical precision, appropriately challenging students to refine their skills in the art making process.
Following the NJ Student Learning Standards (NJSLS), our curriculum balances personal expression with a critical analysis of contemporary and global artists, teaching students how to convey complex meaning through their work. Assessment in these grades is more comprehensive; students are graded on their ability to apply specific techniques, their persistence through the "refining" stage of the artistic process, and their growth in visual literacy. By treating the classroom as a professional studio, we prepare students to not only create art but to articulate the "why" behind their aesthetic choices.
I am so excited to watch your child build confidence, fine motor skills, and a lifelong love for creativity!
Assessment in Art
Students in grades 4-6 will receive grades 3 times a year and are based on project-specific criteria, time management skills, and overall behavior and respect in the art room.
Student artwork is NOT assessed on artistic ability. Grades are based on the learning process and the techniques used. The grading criteria is a tool used to help students recognize their strengths and allow them to improve as needed.
The criteria is designed as follows:
Understanding Art Concepts - Does your project utilize the elements and princples of art as discussed? Can you speak confidently about your project and process?
Craftsmanship - Did you use materials appropriately? Did you try your best and use your time wisely when completing each step?
Effort - Did you take time to develop ideas and brainstorm? Did you take your time and made choices that best utilize your time in the art room working on this project?
Time Management - Did you use class time wisely? Did you get started and cleaned up in a timely manner in order to maximise your time in the art room?
Following Directions - Did you listen to directions?
