Throughout the year, faculty and staff have the opportunity to refer students to small educational groups that focus on a specific, targeted topic. Groups have included the following:
Social Skills Group
The lessons taught in this six week group are designed to promote specific social skills that some of our students struggle with on a daily basis. Through the use of small group setting, I target specific social skills identified by the referring teacher. Skills I target include: conversation skills, anger management, relaxation techniques, self-control, and dealing with change.
Lunch Bunch Group
Lunch Bunch is a weekly group run during lunch time with myself, our second counselor for this year, Miss Domanish, and the speech teacher, Mrs. Kirby. Students in this group rotate weekly and are able to choose a friend to bring with them. Students have an opportunity to engage in conversation with peers through topic initiation and topic maintenance. Mrs. Kirby and I encourage conversational turn taking, appropriate conversation, proximity and eye contact throughout group.
Worry Worriers
This group is designed to teach important skills to manage anxiety and worry. Worry Worriers begins with instructions on what worry is and how it affects the body. Then we practice strategies for dealing with worry in the moment.
Banana Splits
This group topic covers divorced, separation or changes families. If you feel as though your child would benefit from this group, please reach out via phone or email.
Wiggle Worms
This small group teaches students what self-control is by using fun and engaging activities. Students are given skills and strategies to use when they feel a little too wiggly!
Zones of Regulation
This research based small and whole group curriculum teaches students to identify and manage their emotions. Students are taught different emotions by the use of a color system and are given emotional regulation strategies while also teaching them how to read their body's cues when they are handling tough emotions.
