by Matthew Brown
After a season of hard work and dedication the Newington Boys golf team finished 5-3 in matches ending on October 21st. Their first match was a loss to Glastonbury with a score of 155-157. Jack Petronio scored the best for Newington with a score of 38. The second match of the season led to a win against Berlin. This score was 156-159. Newington's own Jacob Dewitt achieved medalist with a score of 37, one over par. After facing off against our rivals, we beat Wethersfield 153-157. Jacob Dewitt once again secured medalist with a score of 36. With an astonishing victory against Rocky Hill, sophomore Dylan Dindinger had a score of 35, shooting one below par. With another stellar performance, Newington beat Berlin and Windsor scoring 149. Nearing the end of the season, the boys golf team competed in the CCC tournament placing 9th. To finish the season, Newington competed in the 2024 CIAC Division 1 Fall State Championship. Newington placed 12th out of 20 other teams. Concluding this season, the Boys Golf team feels confident about next year. Graduating seniors Jacob Dewitt, Jack Petronio, Tristan Gorman and Lucas Robson have been a huge part of this team and will be missed. Senior Jacob Dewitt said, “Playing with these guys has been a highlight of my four years.” Underclassman Brayden Karanian said, “Golf helped me learn the value of knowing that not everything has to be perfect. Sometimes you will fail and it is how you respond to the failure that counts rather than how you let failure respond.” We look forward to seeing how next season will go.
Football Season Highlights
by Zofia Cygan
Our very own Newington Football Team has been all over the news including GameTime CT and The New Britain Herald, with statements like, “The only donut that matters to the Newington football team is the “0” in its loss column” (Ron Ruck, CT Insider). While we can all see the scoreboard at the end of the night and hear our Nor’easters' plays announced by Jeff Gambino’s classic comments, let’s take an inside look into the team with statements from players like Enzo Corvino, Josiah Sims, Aiden Bengston, and others.
The football season here at Newington isn’t over and we can clearly see the improvements they’ve made. Geronimo Ortiz, a junior on the team, mentioned better habits being developed by the coaches such as working hard and learning to show dedication to the sport. He also talked about becoming more comfortable working as a team which another team member, Aiden Bengston, added. Their team has adopted a new culture and there's better chemistry between players leading to fluid plays on the field. This chemistry between the boys was a common answer from all the players on why they have all grown so much together this year. One team member said that the companionship built off the field led to trust in each other on the field.
Family and friends have also helped the team become a success this season. A junior, Heath Weeden, talked about how the boosters have been such an amazing help in team bonding by allowing them to be the best version of themselves. If you didn’t know, the boosters are a group of volunteer parents who join together to support a school activity, usually by raising money or gaining more volunteers. Players also agreed that their friends and family along with the rush of a great win to be able to show off their stats has driven them to the scores we see today. Meljo Jebbu, a junior, went on to say how his friends and family pushed them to be the greatest version of themselves on and off the field. This just shows that it’s equally as important as fun to fill out our student section.
To finish off this segment, Newingon’s Band Coordinator, Stephen Brookes, commented, “The marching band is really enjoying playing the fight song so many times. We're having a great year playing our marching band show, which is music to Bruno Mars. It's definitely fun to be a part of a winning season.” This just shows how the team is well cheered on by many staff, students, and parents who are all excited to experience the rest of the season with them. Good Luck Nor’easters!
