As my soft fingers grasped the root of the flower
In the field of green, leafy things
In a field of creepy, crawly things
My lips formed into a whistle
Blowing away the dandelions delicate feathers
Wishing upon the broken star
Secret like a whisper
Quiet like a prayer
"My Little Strawberry Patch"
Kasia DeNapoli
My little strawberry patch
Red and patchy like a rash
Pigmented, but not always
I was born with it
But I never liked it
It was so red that
it stood out against my pale skin.
Like someone singing a solo
On my arm
To be heard and seen by
Everyone
People said that I needed
To see a doctor
That it was contagious
That I was contagious
That's all they saw
They never saw me
They never saw it
the way I saw it
I see it as a scar of bravery
As a scar of perseverance
How I dealt with years of bullying for it
How I embraced it
Instead of getting rid of it with a surgery
But instead of hating it
I love it.
It's my Little strawberry patch
It shines against my pale skin
Beautifully
like a symphony of beautiful shades and tints
And I love seeing and hearing that symphony
Without shame but instead with joy
