Women's History Month

The month of March is Women’s History Month, and during this time Newington proudly honors the women and girls who have helped to shape our nation. Since 1987, Women’s History Month has helped us recognize and honor the women who have played a vital role in shaping all facets of the world. Throughout our collective history, women have worked to stabilize, ensure the integrity of, and confront the injustices within our social fabric.

The contributions of women have shaped our social, institutional, and cultural fabric. Yet, these contributions are often overlooked. The contributions of women of color as well as women from under represented ethnic, cultural, and identity groups are especially marginalized. Our commitment to amplify the voices of underrepresented peoples compels us to lift up the names and experiences of women.

We invite all members of our school community to participate in an homage to Women's History Month. For the rest of the month we will explore the history of advocacy/leadership, community building, and contributions to education that women and girls across identity groups have had. This showcase of experiences and perspectives will be led by our very own Kristen Freeman. She has an unwavering commitment to supporting and honoring the voices and views of women and specifically women of color. In her role as leader and educator she has uncovered opportunities for others to give voice to equity in education.

Tune in throughout the coming weeks to hear members of our school community speak various key aspects of life and leadership connected to their experiences as women in the Newington Public Schools Community.
