Google Hangouts Meet is very similar to Zoom. Both are videoconferencing tools with audio and video. Here's a comparison of the two that continues to change as the days pass.
Hangouts Meet Directions NOTE: If you're calling in on the phone, make sure you know how to mute your phone ESPECIALLY if you leave your phone on speaker.
Google Meets Grid View Extension- This organizes kids pics like The Brady Bunch and Zoom. The Highlight speakers option let's you know who is talking. You also have the options to included yourself on the grid.
Meet Attendance- Creates a Google Sheet with those in attendance at a Google Meet.
Nod- Reactions for Google Meet- This is very new. It gives muted people the ability to show an emoji and raise their hand! I have only allowed this for staff so far to test. Let me know if you would like to try it out with students.
Two resources for an online whiteboard. These would allow you to show a math problem or demonstrate something while sharing your screen with others.
You can also record just yourself in a Hangouts meet teaching a lesson. The record option is in the three dots in the bottom right. After you stop the recording, it created a "Meet Recordings" folder in your Google Drive if you do not have one already and then stores the file in there. Google also emails you that the file has been uploaded. You can then rename it if you choose.
One cool feature I did like is the ability to add captions so it types what each person is saying at the bottom of your screen. Kids can turn these on too! It's within the three dots- Turn on captions.
